SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (Sept. 6) -- Freshman goalkeeper
Kori Butterfield (Duvall/Cedarcrest) saw her first career shutout slip away in double overtime as the Central Washington University Wildcats fell to host San Francisco State University, 1-0, on Monday afternoon at Cox Stadium.
The Gators broke a scoreless tie less than five minutes into double overtime as Carly Bliss took a pass from teammate Nicole Vanni and found the back of the Wildcat net, just over the reach of Butterfield. Before the late goal, Central hadn't surrendered a goal to the Gators in over 323 minutes in the series dating back to the 2006 season.
“Today's game was an even game in the first half,” said head coach
Michael Farrand. “But they (SF State) took it a bit harder in the second half and in the overtime periods. We had a hard time winning balls (served out of) the back and we misplayed a ball that ultimately led to their goal.”
San Francisco State outshot Central 18-8 with seven shots on goal to the Wildcats' two. Both teams took five shot attempts in the first half, but Central was unable to keep pressure on the Gators with only three shots the rest of the match. SF State had eight of its 18 shot attempts in the 15 minutes of the two overtime periods.
Defensively, Butterfield did her best to keep the Wildcats in the game as she stopped five shots on goal.
Sophomore
Carson McKole (Oak Harbor) led the Wildcat offensive attack with four of the team's eight shots, with one on goal.
The Wildcats, now 0-2-0 on the season, will return home prior to their next road trip. Central's next contest will be this coming Saturday (Sept. 11), when they face Mesa State (2-0-0) in St. George, Utah, as part of a two-game trip.
