Tomaso and Franks Both Score, Wildcats Sweep Season Series

Box Score

MONMOUTH, Ore. (Oct. 20) -- Seniors Serena Tomaso (Enumclaw) and Brittany Franks (Yakima/West Valley HS) both scored a goal Thursday afternoon as the Central Washington University women's soccer team defeated Western Oregon University 2-1.

Central improved to 7-3-4 on the season and 6-2-2 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, moving into second place in the conference standings with Montana State Billings' tie at Western Washington. Western Oregon fell to 5-6-3 overall and 4-4-2 in the GNAC. The win also secured the Wildcats' first season-series sweep over the Wolves since the 2000 season.

Tomaso got Central on the board in the 37th minute as she scored from 25 yards out on a pass from Tarah Duty (Black Diamon/Tahoma HS) to give the Wildcats a 1-0 heading in to halftime.

Just under 10 minutes into the second half, the Wildcats added another goal as freshman Danielle Brandli (Bellevue/Interlake HS) sent a cross that deflected off a WOU defender and Franks recovered the ball and beat the goalie form 12 yards out, giving the Wildcats a 2-0 advantage.

Western Oregon took advantage of a lapse in the CWU defense and LaChante Horton scored the Wolves' only goal of the game in the 84th minute to cut the Wildcat advantage to the final 2-1 mark.

Both teams finished the match with 19 shots, with Central taking a 5-4 edge in corner kicks. Franks and Tomaso, along with Kelsy Villegas (Graham/Graham-Kapowsin HS), and Carson McKole (Oak Harbor), all had three shot attempts in the game for CWU.

Freshman goalkeeper Kayla Lipston (Federal Way/Decatur HS) started for the third consecutive game and recorded seven saves.

Next up for the Wildcats is the final home match of the season this Sunday (Oct. 23) at 1 p.m. against Saint Martin's University.  Central Washington will be honoring each of its six seniors who will be playing their final home game as a Wildcat.
