YAKIMA (Oct 22) -- Senior Manuel Santos (Yakima/A.C. Davis HS) finished in 16th place and was the top male finisher for the Central Washington University men's cross country team, which placed eighth at the 11th Annual Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships at the Apple Ridge Cross Country Facility on Saturday.

Santos, who was one of nine Wildcats running on the men's side, finished the GNAC Championship race with an overall time of 26:02.

“The dream goal would have been if Manuh would have placed in the top 10, and he was really close,” CWU head coach Kevin Adkisson said.

Following Santos was Nathan Minor (Mount Vernon), who posted a 30th-place finish with an overall time of 26:34.

Sophomore Nathan Power (Burlington/Burlington-Edison HS) had his best performance of the season, finishing in 50th place with a time of 27:23 and an average mile time of 5:31.

The Central men accumulated 203 team points en route to their eighth-place finish, placing ahead of Montana State Billings and Alaska Fairbanks.

On the women's side, redshirt freshman Connie Morgan (Hoquiam) finished the six-kilometer race in 44th place with a time of 24:25, marking the fifth time this season that she has been Central's top finisher.

“Being (Morgan's) first-ever season running cross country, Connie has done a great job,” Adkisson said.

The Central women finished in 10th place, totaling 269 team points.

Alaska Anchorage successfully defended its team titles in both the men's and women's competition, as the Seawolves dominated the top of the field.

Central Washington will close out its 2011 cross country season in two weeks, traveling to the NCAA Division II West Region Championships at Plantes Ferry Park in Spokane.
