BELLINGHAM (Sept. 17) -- The Central Washington University women's soccer team was outshot 24-2 and played the final 72 minutes with just 10 players, resulting in a 1-0 loss to arch rival Western Washington University Saturday evening at Orca Field.

Both teams now stand with identical records of 2-2-2 and 1-1-0 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.

The Wildcats were outshot 8-1 in the opening half, and lost senior defender Hillary Franks (Yakima/West Valley HS) in the 18th minute to a red card violation, forcing CWU to play the rest of the game with just ten players, and still managed to keep the match scoreless in the first 45 minutes.

“We played well with just ten; it didn't really affect us,” CWU head coach Michael Farrand said. “We defended well and countered well, we just didn't get as many shots off as we would have liked.”

The Vikings' offense was aggressive in the second half as they doubled their first-half output in shots, totaling 16, with four being on goal. One of those four shots on goal came in the 52nd minute, when Kelly Cates scored from 30 yards out to give Western Washington the 1-0 advantage.

Seniors Amy Pate (Federal Way/Thomas Jefferson HS) and Brittany Franks (Yakima/West Valley HS) were the only to Wildcats to attempt a shot, both of which were on goal and saved by WWU goalie Jamie Arthur.

CWU sophomore Kori Butterfield (Duvall/Cedarcrest HS) had six saves in goal, playing the first 76 minutes.

The 24 shots by the Vikings were the most by a CWU opponent in almost four years, dating back to an Oct. 20, 2007 matchup with Seattle Pacific. Western also took a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Central Washington will look to get back on the winning track on Thursday, Sept. 22, as they host Western Oregon University at 4 p.m. at the CWU Soccer Field.
