SPOKANE (Sept. 24) -- With most of their top runners taking the week off from competition, the Central Washington University men's and women's cross country teams had a small contingent at the Runners Soul Erik Anderson Invitational at Plantes Ferry Park on Saturday morning.

The Wildcats had just eight runners combined between their men's and women's teams, with the women fielding the minimum of five runners for a team score while the men had three and finished with an incomplete team finish. The CWU women finished 26th.

Saturday's meet was held at the site of the NCAA Division II West Region and National Championships later this fall. The course was Central's longest of the season to date, with a six-kilometer race for the women and an eight-kilometer distance for the men.

Sophomore Taylor Kartes (Federal Way/Todd Beamer HS) led the Wildcats' women's pack, completing the course in 25:44 and as the only Wildcat runner among the top 200 individually. Her four teammates in Saturday's race -- freshman Shelby Bodily (Camas), junior Adriana Zazula (Puyallup/Rogers HS), junior Sarah Flatebo (Graham/Graham-Kapowsin HS), and freshman Brianna Bofinger (Poulsbo/Central Kitsap HS) all finished within 17 places of one another.

The CWU men rested all of their top runners on Saturday, and two of the three Wildcats competing were making their official racing debut for the Crimson and Black. Freshman Ryan Loutsis (Bothell/Archbishop Murphy HS) was the top finisher with an eight-kilometer time of 29:08 in his debut, while junior Matt Nodine (Ellensburg) finished in 29:27 and freshman Peter Troianello (Yakima/Eisenhower HS) had a time of 30:34.

Central Washington is expected to have its top runners in action next Saturday (Oct. 1) when the Wildcats travel to the Charles Bowles Willamette Invitational in Salem, Ore.
