ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Jan. 28) -- The Central Washington University women's basketball team held Alaska Anchorage to 33.3 percent shooting in the second half, but a woeful offensive night for the Wildcats proved costly in an 80-48 defeat against the 12th-ranked Seawolves on Saturday night at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

The Wildcats fell to 6-12 overall and 3-8 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play, while UAA maintained its lead in the conference standings, improving to 10-1 in GNAC games and 19-3 overall.

Central Washington finished the game shooting just 18.3 percent from the floor, making just 11 of 60 field-goal attempts. It was the Wildcats' lowest single-game shooting percentage since becoming a NCAA Division II member in 1998-99, and was the third-lowest single-game percentage in school history (dating back to 1980-81).

The night started off in promising fashion for the Wildcats, who scored on their opening two possessions, thanks to a three-pointer by freshman COURTNEY JOHNSON (Kent/Kentwood HS) and a lay-up by junior STACY ALBRECHT (Federal Way/Thomas Jefferson HS) in the opening minute. However, Central Washington's shooting went ice cold at that point, missing 23 of their next 24 attempts, and 27 of their final 29 tries before halftime. The Wildcats did not reach double digits on the scoreboard until 2:46 remaining in the first half on a lay-up by freshman TAYLER FETTIG (Olympia), whose basket was the final field goal of the first half for CWU. Alaska Anchorage led 48-16 at the break after making 64.5 percent of its shots.

The second half proved to be better overall for the Wildcats on both ends of the floor, as they matched Alaska Anchorage with 32 points. They held the Seawolves to just 9 of 27 from the field (33.3 percent) and CWU went 16 of 21 at the free throw line over the final 20 minutes while outrebounding UAA 28-17 in the second half.

Central Washington finished the game with a 41-39 rebounding advantage, totaling 20 offensive rebounds but converting those chances into just 12 second-chance points. The Wildcats' top three scorers on the season -- sophomore JESSICA VANDYKE (Chester, Mont./Chester-Joplin-Inverness HS), senior SOPHIE RUSSELL (Olympia/River Ridge HS), and junior ALEX DUNN (West Valley City, Utah/Hunter HS) -- combined to make just 2 of 23 shot attempts including 0 of 9 from three-point range. In fact, Albrecht was the lone CWU starter (and one of just two Wildcats overall) to make more than one field goal on the night. Sophomores ANNIE MARTINEZ (Moxee/East Valley HS) and KELSI JACOBSON (Spokane/University HS) finished as the team's top scorers with seven points apiece off the bench, while Albrecht and Russell scored six each.

Alaska Anchorage had the game's only two double-figure scorers, as Haley Holmstead led all players with 24 points including 12 of 13 at the free throw line. Hanna Johansson had a double-double for the Seawolves, netting 21 points and 11 rebounds in just 25 minutes of action.

Central Washington, which has six of its final eight games at home inside Nicholson Pavilion, will open up a four-game home stand next Saturday afternoon (Feb. 4) at 2 p.m. versus Northwest Nazarene University.
