CWU Women's Basketball Drops Fourth Straight Contest, 65-48 versus Seattle Pacific

Falcons Use 30-10 Run to Break Away from Wildcats

Box Score

SEATTLE (Dec. 1) -- The Central Washington University women's basketball team was held to a season-low 48 points, as the Wildcats suffered their fourth consecutive loss with a 65-48 defeat at the hands of host Seattle Pacific University on Saturday night at Brougham Pavilion.

The Wildcats fell to 3-4 overall and 0-2 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play, while Seattle Pacific improved to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the conference.

“Our half-court defense has been really good, and we are getting more shots than our opponents and just aren't hitting,” CWU head coach Shawn Nelson said. “The effort is definitely there, but unfortunately we just had a poor weekend shooting the ball, and that's part of the game.”

In Saturday's contest, the Wildcats finished with 59 field goal attempts but made just 19. Seattle Pacific was 20 of 45 in the game, and CWU forced the Falcons into 19 turnovers while committing just 17 of its own.

CWU played close with the Falcons for the first 12 minutes of the game, leading three times in the first ten minutes including a 12-10 advantage with 9:20 to go. From that point, however, Seattle Pacific finished the half on a 19-6 scoring run as part of an overall 30-10 spurt that saw the Wildcats fall behind by 18 early in the second half.

The two teams had nearly identical shooting percentages in the first half, with CWU making 8 of 23 (34.8 percent) and SPU hitting on 9 of 24 (37.5 percent). The difference proved to be from both three-point range and the free throw line in the opening stanza, as the Falcons made three more long-distance shots and were 6 of 10 at the free throw line. The Wildcats did not attempt a foul shot until the 15:54 mark of the second half.

CWU finished the game with a season-low seven free throw attempts, making just three, to mark the second time in as many games this week that the Wildcats attempted fewer than 10 foul shots. They went 4 for 9 in Thursday's 66-59 loss at Montana State University Billings.

Junior Jessica VanDyke (Chester, Mont./Chester-Joplin-Inverness HS) was the only CWU player in double figures for scoring, finishing with 11. She was just 4 of 15 from the floor, including 3 of 11 from three-point range, where the Wildcats were just 7 of 24 (29.2 percent) as a team. Junior Leslie Stillar (Nine Mile Falls/Lakeside HS) came off the bench to score eight, including a pair of three-pointers, while junior Amber Moser (Willamina, Ore./Sheridan HS) added seven. Freshman Jasmine Parker (Spokane/Mead HS) was the team's top rebounder with seven boards.

Seattle Pacific was led by Suzanna Ohlsen with 20 points, including 4 of 4 from three-point range and 6 of 9 overall. She also had five assists without a turnover for the Falcons, who finished at 50 percent (7 of 14) from three-point range and 44.4 percent from the field.

Central Washington will step out of conference play with three non-conference home games later this month. The Wildcats host The Evergreen State College on Dec. 14, followed by back-to-back contests against the University of Hawaii at Hilo on Dec. 17 and 18. All three of those contests are scheduled for 7 p.m. starts at Nicholson Pavilion.
