SEATTLE (Nov. 16) -- Seniors JESSICA VANDYKE (Chester, Mont./Chester-Joplin-Inverness HS) and AMBER MOSER (Willamina, Ore./Sheridan HS) scored eight second-half points each, helping rally the Central Washington University women's basketball team to its first win of the 2013-14 season, 63-58, over Montana Tech on Saturday afternoon at the Sodexo Tip-Off Classic.

Both teams saw their overall records evened on Saturday. CWU won its first game in two starts, while Montana Tech fell to 3-3 after suffering its second tournament loss in as many days.

"Jessica and Amber got us off to a great start," third-year CWU head coach Shawn Nelson said. "We played well at times, and cut down on our turnovers a bit, but I'm most proud of the fact that we came back from a second-half deficit to win. We can build on that."

VanDyke almost single-handedly carried the Wildcats offensively in the first half, when she scored 16 of her team's 30 points. She made 6 of 7 first-half shots, including 4 of 5 from three-point range, but CWU trailed by two at the break after holding a pair of 11-point leads in the opening 20 minutes.

Montana Tech, which competes as a member of the NAIA, went on a 9-0 run early in the second half to take a 43-36 lead with 13:51 left. CWU chipped away at the deficit, though, then regaining the lead 4 1/2 minutes later at 46-45. One tie and a lead change ensued before the Wildcats went ahead on a jumper by senior ALLY SCHMITT (Snohomish) at the 6:45 mark and CWU did not trail again.

Moser made all four of her second-half shots en route to her eight points after halftime, while VanDyke cooled a bit by making 3 of 8 in the final period. CWU outscored Montana Tech by a 33-26 margin and forced 18 Oredigger turnovers in the second half to steal the win.

CWU continued to cut down on its turnovers, trimming its total to 15 on Saturday after 20 in Friday's regular-season opener against Point Loma. The Wildcats also finished even in the rebounding department (28-28) while shooting 43.4 percent from the field.

Nine of the 12 CWU players to appear in the contest scored at least two points. Schmitt added seven, and junior ERIKA LOCKER (Ferndale) finished with six points and a game-high six rebounds in 22 minutes off the bench. Wildcat reserves outscored Montana Tech's subs by a 17-4 margin.

The Orediggers were led by Kelsey DeWit's 16 points, while fellow starters Kabri Emerson and Mandy Machinal scored 13 each. DeWit also led Montana Tech with five rebounds, five assists, and three steals.

CWU will play its home opener next Saturday (Nov. 23), facing Quest University (B.C.) in a noon tip-off at Nicholson Pavilion.
