Box Score
LACEY (Feb. 9) -- Junior
Leslie Stillar (Nine Mile Falls/Lakeside HS) scored 18 first-half points, and the Central Washington University women's basketball team held Saint Martin's University to 26 percent shooting in a 52-38 victory over the Saints on Saturday night at Marcus Pavilion.
The Wildcats snapped a four-game losing streak, improving to 9-11 overall and 4-8 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play. Saint Martin's fell to 11-12 overall and 4-9 in the conference.
The 38 points scored by SMU were the fewest allowed to a NCAA Division II opponent by CWU since February 2006, when the Wildcats held Western Oregon to 32 points in a 62-32 win.
Stillar finished the game with 18 points, attempting just four shots in the second half. She was 7 for 10 from the field prior to halftime, including 4 of 6 from three-point range, as the Wildcats built a 14-point edge at the break. CWU used an 11-0 run midway through the period to overcome its final deficit -- 8-6 -- and led by as many as 16 points (26-10) in the opening 20 minutes of play.
The Wildcats were efficient sharing the basketball in the first half of play, totaling 10 assists on their 12 made baskets in the period. They also posted a commanding 22-14 advantage on the boards and overcame 27.8 percent shooting (5 of 18) from three-point range in the first half. Saint Martin's shot just 23.8 percent in the first half, making just five field goals.
CWU led by double digits the entire second half, extending the margin to 21 points with 5:15 to play. The Wildcats actually went the final 4:01 without scoring, missing their final six field goal attempts, but Saint Martin's only scored six points over that same span to cut the final differential to six.
In addition to the game-high scoring total from Stillar, junior
Amber Moser (Willamina, Ore./Sheridan HS) finished with 10 points and seven rebounds, and freshman
Jasmine Parker (Spokane/Mead HS) totaled eight points and 10 rebounds. The Wildcats outrebounded Saint Martin's, 44-38.
The Saints were led by Chelsea Haskey with 11 points, five rebounds, and three blocked shots. Reserve Megan Wiedeman was the next leading scorer for Saint Martin's with seven points and five rebounds.
CWU, which has already matched its 2011-12 win total with six games remaining, will play four of its final six contests at home. The Wildcats return to Nicholson Pavilion next week for games against Alaska Anchorage and Alaska on Thursday (Feb. 14) and Saturday (Feb. 16), respectively.
