Cold Shooting Night Dooms Women’s Basketball in Alaska

Box Score FAIRBANKS, AK (Feb. 1) -- Central Washington University junior ERIKA LOCKER (Ferndale HS) had a season-high 13 points, but the Women's basketball team shot just 34.9 percent from the field en route to an 88-68 loss to the University of Alaska Saturday night in Fairbanks.

The Wildcats fall to 6-13 on the season, 1-10 in GNAC play.  Alaska improves to 9-10, 3-8 in GNAC.

ALLY SCHMITT (Snohomish HS) got the Wildcats on the board scoring on the opening possession of the game to put the Wildcats ahead 2-0.  That would be the last lead for the Wildcats as the Nanooks went on a 14-0 run to take a 14-2 lead with 16:23 left in the first-half.  Alaska continued to hang on to a double-digit lead and entered halftime with a 49-36 advantage over the Wildcats.

The second-half didn't prove to be much different for the Wildcats with the Nanooks building upon its advantage as they led by 20 points on a number of occasions.

Schmitt and JESSICA VANDYKE (Chester, MT) had a hard time finding the basket as the two starters combined to shoot 3 of 18 from the field.  As a team the Wildcats made just 22 of 63 attempts and were 6 of 20 from the three-point arc. Locker came off the bench to score her 13 points making 4 of her 10 attempts, including 2 of 6 from downtown.

A bright spot for the Wildcats was the fact that they converted on 18 of their 22 free throw attempts – 81.8 percent – which is over 10 percentage points above their season average.

Alaska was hot all game long making 54.5 percent (36 of 66) and was 8 of 16 from three-point territory.  The Nanooks were led by Jordan Wilson, who scored 16 points on the night.

Up next the women's basketball team returns to Ellensburg and plays host to Simon Fraser and archrival Western Washington next Thursday and Saturday.
