ELLENSBURG, Wash. (Jan. 28) – The Central Washington University women's basketball team will get to play home games for the first time in two weeks when they host Alaska Anchorage and Alaska this Thursday and Saturday at 7 p.m.
The Wildcats went 2-1 in their three-game road trip with wins over Montana State Billings and a trilling overtime win over Northwest Nazarene last Saturday.
In their last outing against NNU, the Wildcats were sparked by outstanding performances from post players Jasmin Parker and
Alexis Berrysmith. Parker had 17 points and a season-high 16 rebounds, making six of her eight shots. Berrysmith was a perfect 4-for-4 from the field scoring eight points and hauling down eight rebounds. Both players had a season-high of six blocks in the game accounting for all the CWU rejections in the game.
Parker has now scored in double-figures in each of the last six contests, bumping her season average to 9.2. With 21 blocks on the season, she is just 12 swats away from trying the schools all-time career record.
The Wildcats will get back point guard Jasmine Edwards who missed last week's game due to injury. Edwards is tied with
Courtney Johnson as teams leading scorer with 13.5 points per game and she also leads the team in assists (4.2 per game) and steals at 28.
The Wildcats are one of the best defensive teams in the conference holding teams to just 60.2 points per game, a mark that is second to only Alaska Anchorage. Central Washington is second in opponent field goal percentage at 38.8, and ranks third in three-point field goal defense allowing opponents to connect on just 30.7-percent of their shots from behind the arch.
Scouting Alaska Anchorage The Seawolves come into Ellensburg ranked third in the country having won six straight contests with an overall record of 18-1.
Alaska Anchorage has six players who average 10 or more points per game, lead by Megan Mullings at 12.2. The Seawolves lead the conference in a host of statistical categories including: scoring offence (83.4), scoring defense (57.5), rebounding margin (+11.2), and steals (16.6).
The Seawolves uses high tempo and full court press for nearly the entire length of their games, which has proven fruitful so far this season.
Scouting Alaska The Nannoks are on a three-game slide after riding a six-game winning streak that included a 66-57 win over CWU. They are 12-7 on the season and 4-5 in conference, trailing CWU by just one game.
Jordan Wilson leads Alaska with 16.3 points per game and is third on the squad with 5.9 caroms a game. Wilson not only leads the Nanooks in shot attempts (202) she also leads the team in field goal percentage at 53.5.
As a team the Nanooks leads the GNAC with 27.2 defensive rebounds per game, but is seventh in rebounding margin at +0.4.
