Johnson, Yada Lead Wildcats to Day One Sweep Over NNU

Nampa, ID (April. 17) --Pitching was the story for the Central Washington University baseball team Friday afternoon. The Wildcats' bullpen was rather bored as both starting pitchers; Zach Johnson and Mitch Yada twirled complete games en route to a sweep of Northwest Nazarene University. The Wildcats took game one 9-2 and game two 5-0, running their record to 20-21 overall and 11-15 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) play.

Once again, the Wildcats jumped on the board early, plating four runs in the first inning. Darren Honeysett led the inning off by reaching base on an error and advanced on Kasey Bielec's single up the middle. Benjamin Dunbar walked to load the bases and one batter later a wild pitch would score Honeysett. Randy Fuller then drove a run in on a RBI-groundout. Jonathan Dailey then tattooed a home run to deep left-center field to give the Wildcats the early 4-0 lead.

Starting pitcher Zach Johnson turned in a performance that could prove to be crucial in a run to the playoffs for CWU. Johnson fired nine innings, surrendering two earned runs while striking out six and scattering four hits.

The Wildcats added two more in the sixth for a 6-0 lead, but Northwest Nazarene answered for their only two runs of the ballgame. Tim Jones led off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly to left field by Josh Hatfield. Tyler Davis worked a base-on-balls and was brought home after advancing on a wild pitch and a single by Jesse Hilyard.

Central tacked on three more runs in the top half of the eighth to put the seal on a 9-2 victory.

Game two was much of the same story. Yada secured his first win of the season and out-dueled NNU ace Jake Reppert, who was roughed up by CWU in Ellensburg. Yada only needed 82 pitches in the seven-inning contest to scatter six hits and four strikeouts.

In the top of the second, Cory Welch singled through the right side and advanced on a wild pitch. A batter later, Jeff Beckman hammered a single to right field to score Welch.

Central Washington continued to add to their lead with a three-run inning in the third. Honeysett singled and later scored on a single from the GNAC's leading hitter, Kasey Bielec.

The Wildcat's added an insurance run in the sixth and capped off the day one sweep of Northwest Nazarene with a 5-0 win.

The two teams continue play tomorrow with double-header at Elmore Vail Field in Nampa, ID. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. PST.
