ELLENSBURG, Wash (May. 2) –The Central Washington University baseball team celebrated the careers of six seniors Saturday afternoon, prior to defeating NAIA power Lewis and Clark State 14-8 Saturday afternoon, snapping the visitor's 14-game winning streak.
The win ends a rollercoaster season for the Wildcats on a high, as the team was eliminated from postseason play when Northwest Nazarene won an extra-inning battle versus Western Oregon in the third game of a four-game series. The Wildcats were picked to finish first in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference according to the preseason coaches poll.
The Wildcats trailed early in the finale as the Warriors tacked on two runs in the first, second and third innings. But two three-run innings by the home team in the fourth and fifth inning evened the score at 6-6.
The fourth inning started off in the right direction as
Randy Fuller reached on a throwing error from the third basemen. After a
Jonathan Dailey bunt-single, the Wildcats received two big hits from two seniors.
Jeff Beckman laced a single through the six-hole to drive in Fuller, and after a wild pitch advanced Wildcat runners to second and third,
Zach Reay hit a perfectly placed ball down the right field line to chase home two more.
The three-run fifth was the
Jonathan Dailey show as he had a helping hand in all three runs. Dailey tripled to centerfield to chase home
Kasey Bielec and
Myles Wesener, then scored himself on another Warrior passed ball.
The Wildcats played tack-on baseball as a three-run seventh and four-run eighth all but put the game away. In his final at-bat as a Wildcat, Bielec ejected a 1-2-curveball over the leftfield fence for a three-run homerun to give the Wildcats a 11-7 lead.
Bielec led the Wildcats in almost every offense catergory this season as his slash line ended at .409/.488/.608 and a team leading 40 RBIs. His .409 average was the best in the GNAC.
Senior
Cory Welch came on in the eighth inning and recorded six outs to take the Wildcats to the win, five of those outs came by way of swing and misses.
The Wildcats finish their season with a 24-25 overall record and 14-18 in the GNAC.
