PORTLAND, Ore. (Sept. 19) – The Central Washington University soccer team fell in its first Great Northwest Athletic Conference match of the season, 2-0, against Concordia University (Ore.). The Cavaliers are 3-1-1 overall and 1-0-0 in GNAC play. The Wildcats fall to 2-4-0 and 0-1-0 in GNAC match ups.
Central Washington got its first chance of the match in the 11th minute, when the Cavaliers conceded a corner kick. Keilin Farrand took the corner for the Wildcats and she played a ball in that was found by Cassie Ripley, whose shot missed wide left.
In the 22nd minute of play, Alicia Alarcon put a shot towards CWU keeper Amanda White, but White was able to turn it aside for her first save of the game.
A corner kick by Concordia in the 30th minute tested the Wildcats, but Amanda Klep's shot went over the crossbar.
The Wildcats picked up a corner kick in the 36th minute, but could not convert.
In the 40th minute the Cavaliers had back-to-back corner kicks. The Wildcat defense was able to defend against the first shot from Shannon McMahon and then force Ariel Kanable to take a shot that ended up wide.
"We played an even first half and did some good things," Head Coach Michael Farrand said. "We kind of fell apart for a few minutes and gave up a weak side goal and had to fight from then on. We did have a good first half, but we fell a part a little in the second."
The Wildcats came out with a pair of chances early in the second. Ripley took a chance in the 50th minute that was swallowed up by Concordia keeper Olivia Brock. In the 53rd minute Alyssa Navlet was able to find a chance, but her shot missed right.
McMahon found the score sheet first for the Cavaliers. Maddie Prehoda took a corner at the end of the 63rd minute that found the head of McMahon and a 1-0 advantage for Concordia.
The Cavaliers found the back of the net again in the 66th minute on a shot by Bobbi Eckler.
Ripley and Alexis Manning led Central Washington with two shots each. Ripley put one shot on target. White finished with eight saves.
The Wildcats will be back in action on Sept. 24, as they head to Burnaby, B.C. for a GNAC match. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
