ELLENSBURG, Wash. (Oct. 4) – The Central Washington University soccer team went to extra time for the second time this season, but 110 minutes was not enough to solve the 1-1 draw against Seattle Pacific University. The Wildcats are now 8-2-1 overall and 3-1-1 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, while the Falcons are 6-2-2 overall and 3-1-1 in the GNAC.
"Both teams had chances to win," CWU Head Coach Mike Farrand said afterward. "We had the PK late and Stinson made a great save. We played great through the first overtime, had a few chances but couldn't finish. Just another war between CWU and SPU. Hopefully we get to see them again in the GNAC tournament."
The Wildcats struck first in the seventh minute.
Keilin Farrand sent a ball over the top and past the Falcons' back line, where
Mackenzie Nolte gathered it and sent a shot behind Molly Stinson for her third goal of the season.
Bailey Martoncik took a pair of shots a minute apart, the first was saved by Stinson and the second went wide, in the 10
th and 11
th minutes.
The Wildcats generated another chance in the 19
th minute, but
Abbie Litka's shot was sent wide right.
Emily Holt made her first save in the 24
th minute on a drive by Julia DeVere. The Falcons got another chance in the 30
th minute that whistled high from Kelly Gould.
Central held a 1-0 lead heading into halftime, but the lead evaporated only seconds into the second stanza.
Hannah Huesers netted her fifth of the season for SPU on a shot from 20-yards out, levelling the score at 1-1.
An attempt on goal by Nolte in the 63
rd minute was nabbed by Stinson, keeping the game even. The Falcons put a shot on frame that Holt saved in the 67
th.
In the 73
rd minute, Martoncik was fouled inside the six and the Wildcats were granted a penalty kick.
Reilly Retz's penalty was parried by Stinson and the score line stayed 1-1.
A late try by Seattle Pacific was saved by Holt as time expired in regulation, sending the two sides into overtime.
Central Washington got its first chance of extra time on a drive by Farrand, but Stinson made the save.
After a shot by Huesers in the 96
th minute, the Wildcats generated a corner in the 98
th. A shot by
Allie Bohnett went high before a turnover gave
Whitney Lowe a chance, but it too whistled high.
While the Wildcats dominated the first overtime period, neither team found sustainable chances in the second overtime period.
A shot by Sierra Smith in the 101
st minute was pushed wide left. The Falcons gained one more chance as time expired with a corner, but they could not get the kick off in time.
Holt and Stinson both made six saves.
The Wildcats are back in action on Sunday (Oct. 9) as they travel to Monmouth, Oregon to take on Western Oregon in a GNAC matchup. Kickoff is scheduled for noon.
