Jesse Zalk Puts on a Record-Breaking Performance in 41-0 win Over SFU

ELLENSBURG, Wash.  (Nov. 5) – Central Washington University receiver Jesse Zalk broke four single game records and one career record as the football team defeated Simon Fraser University (0-9, 0-6 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) 41-0 Saturday afternoon at Tomlinson Stadium.

Zalk hauled in 10 passes for a school and GNAC record 307 yards, and a school and GNAC record five touchdowns.  In the process, Zalk became the school's all-time leader in all-purpose yards, surpassing CWU Hall of Famer Brian Potucek.  Zalk now has 5,076 all-purpose yards, with still another game to go.

"It is definitely a cool accomplishment to gain that many yards and break the record," Zalk said.  "but it is not just about me it is about this team and guys allowing everyone to make plays.  I am thankful for my offensive line, my quarterbacks and everyone on special teams.  None of this would have happened if it were for my teammates supporting me and each other."

His five scores tied him with former CWU running back Demetrious Sumler who scored five rushing touchdowns in the game, but Zalk's five receiving touchdowns sets a new receiving mark, passing Johnny Spevak who had five.  The 307-yard performance is 71 yards more than Nate Brookerson who totaled 236 receiving yards against Carroll College in 2004.  Brookerson held the GNAC record before Western Oregon's Paul Revis set a new mark of 250 earlier this year.

"Before this game, we wanted to set some sort of record, whether it was Justin throwing touchdowns, or passing records, or whatever it might be," Zalk said about the record setting day.  "We started off strong with the long pass from Justin, and we just kept it going from there."

Quarterback Justin Lane also broke two school records on the day with 16.1 yards per attempts, and his 297.9 passing efficiency rating is more than 40 points higher than the previous mark held by Ryan Robertson.  Lane finished the day with 362 yards passing, connecting on 19 of 25 pass attempts and four touchdowns.

As a team, the Wildcats broke four single game records, and tied another.  Lane and JoJo Hillel combined to throw for 443 yards, which broke the school record set by Mike Reilly in 2008.  They also broke the record for most passing yards gained per attempt (15.3), most yards gained per play (8.8), highest passing efficiency (257.6), and tied the school record for most touchdown passes with five.

It did not take the Zalk and Lane very long to get the record breaking performance started as the duo connected on a 77-yard touchdown pass on the team's first play from scrimmage.  The Lane to Zalk connection took over the second quarter with Zalk hauling in touchdown passes of 44, 50, and seven yards to give CWU a 27-0 halftime lead.  At the half, Zalk had 218 receiving yards and four scores.

After Quincy Carter scored his team-leading fifth rushing touchdown of the season, Hillel hit Zalk on a short completion, and the senior wideout marched 57 yards down field, zig-zagging defenders, to score his record breaking fifth receiving touchdown of the game, and giving CWU the final 41-0 lead.

Overshadowed by the big offensive day, was another stellar defensive effort.  The Wildcats held SFU to 191 yards of offense and just 32 rushing yards.  The CWU defense had four sacks, 13 tackles for loss, and two turnovers.

Kevin Haynes led all players with 12 tackles (2 TFL) and a fumble recovery, followed by Sean Elledge who brought down nine ball carriers and had three tackles for loss.  Defensive end Winslow Kouassi totaled seven tackles, 3.5 tfl and a sack.  Also recording a sack on the day were Jackson Huerta, Nicholas Aumua and Billy Greer

With the win the Wildcats move to 6-3 on the season and 5-2 in the GNAC.

The Wildcats return to action next week for senior day, when they host Humboldt State at Tomlinson Stadium, with kickoff scheduled for Noon.
