Wildcats Take Two From Saint Martin's

The Central Washington University baseball team took both ends of its doubleheader against Saint Martin's University with scores of 13-6 and 4-2.  Central is now 12-6 overall and 8-2 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.  Saint Martin's falls to 6-14 and 3-7 in GNAC play.

Saint Martin's took a 1-0 lead in the first inning for the third-consecutive game of the series to start game one.

The lead was short lived as the Wildcats put up six runs on four hits and two Saints' errors.  In the frame, Dylan Freyre drove in a run on a sacrifice fly to right field and Jonathan Dailey added another on a RBI singe to centerfield plating Tanner Romo.

The Wildcats extended their lead, adding a run in the second and fourth innings on a solo homerun by Reid Martinez and a run scoring single by Freyre to push the CWU advantage to 8-1.

Things fell apart for Central Washington in the sixth inning where Saint Martin's scored five runs on six hits and two Wildcat errors to close the CWU lead to 8-5.

Martinez connected on his second homerun of the contest, a long towering solo shot to left field.  Romo followed two batters later with a single to centerfield that plated both Freyre and Randy Fuller to push the CWU advantage to 11-6 in the sixth inning.

"Well, Reid has been on fire," CWU Head Coach Desi Storey said afterward.  "He got his pitches today and has been dialed in.  Hopefully he can keep it going."

A seventh inning balk by SMU pitcher Jacob Phipps allowed Dailey to cross home plate and extend the CWU lead to 12-6.  The Wildcats added an insurance run in the eighth to finish with the final 13-6 win.

Kyle Blankenship recorded his second win of the season, improving to 2-0 after tossing five innings and striking out one batter.

"He ran out of gas," Storey said.  "It was a good strong outing for us."

Mitch Yada threw three innings of scoreless baseball in relief allowing just two hits, fanning two batters in the process.

"It's good for Mitch, we need him to bounce back a bit," Storey added.

The offensive explosions seen in the first three games of the series diminished in the finale.

Justin Adams tossed five innings of two run baseball, earning his second win of the year.

"He skated around trouble a few times and we played good defense behind him," Storey noted.  "We executed and that was huge."

The Wildcats posted runs in the first, second, and sixth innings.

Martinez roped an RBI double down the left field line in the first.  Another balk beset the Saints' pitching staff in the second inning, scoring Fuller for a 2-0 lead.  Kyle Stahl later scored on a single by Dailey, giving Central a 3-1 lead.

The Saints' drew close in the third, 3-2, before the Wildcats got an insurance run in the sixth.

Fuller singled to right field and Romo laid down a sacrifice bunt moving Fuller to second with one out.  Myles Wesener pinch ran at second and scored on a two-out single by Dailey, giving CWU a 4-2 lead.

"Myles can run and if there was going to be a close play at the plate I wanted someone who could run in there," Storey said.

The Saints went down in order in the seventh, CJ Gettman slammed the door for his fourth save of the season.

The Wildcats are back in action on Tuesday (Mar. 22) for a single game against Corban University.  First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
