PORTLAND, Ore. (Apr. 17) – The Central Washington University baseball team finished its series against Concordia University on a high note, taking both ends of the doubleheader. The Wildcats are now 20-17 overall, with a 16-12 Great Northwest Athletic Conference record. The Cavaliers fall to 12-26 overall and 10-18 in the GNAC.
"We needed that," CWU Head Coach
Desi Storey said. "Splitting kept us right in the mix, but taking two games helps us gain on the top guys."
The Cavaliers scored first in the opener. They pushed a pair of runs across in the fourth inning, taking a 2-0 lead. Concordia scored in the sixth inning as well.
Central struck in the fifth inning on a single by
Darren Honeysett, which brought around
Kyle Stahl.
Trailing 3-1 in the seventh, the Wildcats' bats came alive.
Ryan Atkinson's sacrifice fly brought the score to 3-2. Honeysett then roped a triple, scoring
Bryton Redal.
Reid Martinez gave the Wildcats their first lead, singling to score Honeysett from third and gain a 4-3 lead.
Benjamin Dunbar's sacrifice fly in the eighth gave the Wildcats a two-run cushion, but Central wasn't quite done.
Ryan Archibald brought around Honeysett with a double in the ninth.
Mitch Yada (2-2) tossed seven innings for the win. He allowed three hits on the day.
CJ Gettman pitched a scoreless ninth, earning his seventh save of the season.
"Mitch had a great day for us, he threw well," Storey noted. "He made them swing the bat by pounding the strike zone."
In game two the Wildcats cruised to a 9-1 victory, with Concordia's lone run coming in the bottom of the sixth.
Archibald (1-1) went the distance, allowing four hits, striking out five, and giving up just the one run.
"The good thing is we had some arms if we needed to get in the pen, but our guys threw very well," Storey acknowledged of his pitchers. "Ryan stepped up and had a huge day for us."
Central opened the scoring in the second inning.
Myles Wesener laid down a bunt and both Stahl and
Dylan Freyre came around to score on the play.
The Wildcats led 2-0 after two innings, but put up four runs in the third.
Freyre singled home Atkinson with one down, then a two-out single by Stahl scored Honeysett. Wesener again came up and with runners on and delivered. His single scored both Stahl and Freyre, giving Central a 6-0 lead.
"Pitchers did a great job all weekend," Storey added. "They put us in a spot to get things done. It took a while, but our bats finally got there and we were able to take both games."
The fifth inning saw another crooked number from the Wildcats' offense. Wesener singled with two outs, scoring
Jake Levin from third. Redal then brought home
Rory Graf-Brennen for an 8-0 lead.
Levin's solo blast in the seventh gave the Wildcats a 9-1 decision.
Wesener finished 4-for-4 with five runs batted in game two. Stahl finished with a pair of hits and two runs scored.
"Great day for Myles, he stepped up big time," Storey said of his outfielder.
Central is on the road again this coming weekend against Saint Martin's University.
