NAMPA, Idaho (Sept. 8) – Goals from
Allie Bohnett and
Molly Mortensen lifted the Central Washington University soccer team to a 2-1 victory over the University of Hawaii at Hilo. The Wildcats are 3-0-0 on the season, the first time they have opened the season with three straight wins since 1997.
Central outshot Hilo 12-8, but both sides put five shots on goal. The Wildcats also had four corners to Hilo's one. The two sides combined for 28 fouls. Each team was awarded one yellow card.
The Wildcats broke the 0-0 tie in the 26
th minute, when Bohnett received a pass from
Karlee Goehner. Goehner found Bohnett on the right side and Bohnett was able to bury her shot from 35 yards out.
Mortensen added to the lead in the 32
nd minute.
Keilin Farrand found Mortensen, who beat the backline and the Vulcans' goalkeeper 1-on-1 for a 2-0 lead.
"Molly finished a wonderful ball for us," CWU Head Coach
Michael Farrand said. "She was able to beat the keeper 1-on-1 and get behind the defense."
The Wildcats now have five different goal scorers on the season.
After the restart in the second half, the Vulcans scored their lone goal on a penalty kick.
"We created a great chance in the second and we played a bit of a lazy ball," Farrand said. "We put ourselves under pressure a bit after that penalty."
The Wildcats were able to regain momentum and hold the Vulcans off for the win.
"We got back to playing a little better in the last 20 minutes of the game and had a few chances," Farrand noted. "We just couldn't quite find a third goal late."
Three of the Wildcats' five goals this season have come from defenders. Farrand has now recorded two assists.
Saturday's game against Dominican will be a real test for us," Farrand acknowledged. "We are happy right now with 3-0, we have three out of conference region wins. It's a good place to be."
The Wildcats take on Dominican University of California on Saturday (Sept. 10) at 10 a.m. MDT.
"Player of the match for us was
Emily Holt," Farrand said of his freshman keeper. "She had a significant save for us in the first half and has been consistent for us in the net."
Holt finished the match with four saves. She now has 19 on the season.
