SEATTLE, Wash. (Oct. 12) – The Central Washington University women's soccer team fell in double overtime to Seattle Pacific University, 3-2.
The Wildcats fall to 1-8-3 on the season and 0-5-2 in Great Northwest Athletic competition. The Falcons improve to 7-5-0, with a 5-3-0 mark in GNAC play.
"I thought the effort tonight was better," CWU Head Coach
Michael Farrand said. "Especially when we were down 2-1 with seven minutes to go in the game. We did something we haven't been able to do. Seattle Pacific versus Central games are always tough, [SPU Coach]Arby [Busey] does a great job."
The contest sat scoreless for the first half hour, before
KK Wallace gave the Wildcats a 1-0 advantage.
Jordan Engman fed Wallace and Wallace blasted a shot from 14 yards out that beat Molly Stinson.
Whitney Lowe generated a chance in the 35
th minute, but Stinson came to the rescue and kept the game at 1-0 in favor of Central Washington.
At the halftime whistle, Central led 1-0. Kasey Reeve quickly leveled the score in the opening minutes of the second half. A through ball from Sophia Chilczuk was picked up by Reeve and fired home.
The Wildcats found a pair of chances in the 70
th minute off of a pair of corner kicks, but they could not convert.
Seattle Pacific found a lead in the 82
nd minute when Reeve and Chilczuk connected again, this time with Reeve providing the through ball to Chilczuk for a 2-1 advantage.
Mackenzie Nolte brought the score back to level pegging in the 88
th minute. A long kick from
Emily Holt made its way to Nolte in the box, where Nolte took a short touch and beat Stinson.
A pair of shots in quick succession were turned aside by Holt in 89
th minute, forcing extra time.
The first 10 minutes of extra time saw one shot from Emily Seelbach for Central and a pair of shots from SPU. Both Stinson and Holt made a save.
The second period of extra time went four minutes before Seattle Pacific was awarded a penalty kick. A red card was awarded to Central, forcing them to play shorthanded, and the penalty taken by Simone Herzberg.
Herzberg took her shot to Holt's right, but the Wildcats' keeper went full extension to stymie the shot. The rebound was then sent back on frame by Herzberg, but once again Holt made the save. A second rebound was generated from the rebound shot and, for a third time, Herzberg placed a shot on goal, which Holt turned aside once more.
Holt made one more save in extra time in the 106
th minute. She finished with nine saves.
The game-winning goal came with just 32 seconds remaining. A turnover in the neutral third led to a through ball for Chilczuk, who netted her second of the contest.
The Wildcats finished with 13 shots and five corners.
Central Washington is back in action on Saturday (Oct. 14) at Simon Fraser University. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
