ELLENSBURG, Wash. (Oct. 19) – The Central Washington University women's soccer team fell 1-0 to Northwest Nazarene University in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference match.
The Wildcats are now 1-10-3 overall and 0-7-2 in GNAC play. The Crusaders improve to 10-5-0 and 7-3-0 in GNAC matches.
"Disappointed," CWU Head Coach
Michael Farrand said. "We created some chances, but couldn't finish. I think we played well enough to win, but we weren't able to capitalize. Hats off to NNU and Mary [Trigg] for their success this season."
The newly branded Nighthawks got the game's first chance in the second minute. Rikki Myers fired a shot that Central goalkeeper
Emily Holt handled easily.
The Wildcats offense got its first chance in the 11
th minute.
Emmi Seelbach's shot off of a corner was turned aside by Daniele Ortiz, keeping the contest at 0-0. The Wildcats continued to build pressure throughout the first half, totaling six shots in the first 45 minutes.
The 41
st minute proved troublesome for the Wildcats. A free kick from NNU was sent towards the top of the 18 and a headed clearance attempt was made by a Wildcat defender. The header careened backwards and into the Wildcats' net as an own goal, giving NNU a 1-0 advantage.
The Wildcats ramped up the offensive pressure in the second half, firing eight shots, but did not find the equalizer.
Possibly the Wildcats' best chance at an equalizer came in the 86
th minute. Seelbach took a corner and found the head of
Mackenzie Nolte, but Nolte's header whistled wide.
Central Washington finished with 14 shots, while the Wildcats held Northwest Nazarene to 11. Holt finished with four saves, including three in the second half.
The Wildcats are back in action on Saturday (Oct. 21) as they head up to Bellingham to meet rival No. 2 Western Washington. Kick-off is slated for 2 p.m.
