BELLINGHAM, Wash. (Oct. 21) – The Central Washington University women's soccer team fell to No. 2 Western Washington, 6-0, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference matchup.
The Wildcats are now 1-11-3 overall and 0-8-2 in GNAC contests. Western Washington improves to 14-0-0 overall and 11-0-0 in GNAC play.
"A little bit of
déjà vu from our regional play," CWU Head Coach
Michael Farrand said. "We gave up a goal in first 30 seconds. Our response was pretty good, however, we never stopped fighting and we worked to create chances. On defense we struggled and made a few miscues, it's a back line that we have pieced together all year due to injuries."
Western Washington tallied its first goal just 22 seconds into the match. Lindsey Fujiwara played a long ball to Karli White, who sent a service into the box, where it was one-touched in by Gariela Pelogi.
The Wildcats offense responded quickly, firing a pair of shots in quick succession from
Emmi Seelbach and
Mackenzie Nolte.
In the 21
st minute Sophie Butterfield headed a service from White into the back of the net for a 2-0 advantage.
Following Butterfield's goal, an injury forced
Emily Holt from the game. Holt had made two saves before being replaced by
Madeline Fletcher.
"Madeline came up huge with a couple big saves after we had to replace Emily," Farrand added. "She was big for us."
Fletcher finished with six saves.
The Vikings found the back of the net once more in the first half and thrice more in the second.
Jordan Engman had a pair of shots stopped in the last 20 minutes of action. In the 88
th minute,
Emily Minogue fired a shot high. The Wildcats finished with a total of five shots, two corners, and eight saves.
Central takes on Concordia (Ore.) to open the final week of conference play next Thursday (Oct. 26) at 7:30 p.m. in Portland, Oregon.
