CWU Volleyball Outlasts Concordia in Five Sets

ELLENSBURG, Wash.- The Central Washington University women's volleyball team downed the Concordia University (Ore.) Cavaliers in five sets (25-21, 20-25, 25-16, 19-25, 15-12) Saturday night at Nicholson Pavilion.

"Tonight's match was a game of momentum," CWU head coach Mario Andaya explained. "We just happened to be on our game for those last three or four points. We were having a lot of trouble with their outside hitters and they were using our block to their advantage. We need to engage in competition a little bit better. It seems like we were a little irritated that they were extending rallies and scoring points on us. We needed to get our poise back, and I thought we did that at the end."

CWU extended its streak of victories to five and moves to 15-5 on the season and 10-2 in GNAC play, while Concordia dropped to 9-10 overall and 4-8 in conference play.

Three Wildcats recorded double-digit kills on the evening with junior Shelby Mauritson recording a career-high 24 kills, Maggie McTaggart notching 12 kills, and Bridgette Webb adding in 11 kills for CWU.

Sophomore Niki Cook dished out a team-high 28 assists, followed by Gabrielle Aihara with 25.

Kyla Morgan totaled 26 digs, while Mauritson and Cook also had a double-digit dig effort, finishing with 18 and 11 digs, respectively. Senior Sabrina Wheelhouse led Central Washington at the net, tallying a total of seven blocks in the match.

The Wildcats registered more kills (60-59) and service aces (8-7than the Cavaliers, while also posting a better hitting percentage (.193-.174).

CWU will travel to Alaska next Thursday to face the University of Alaska Anchorage at 7 p.m.
