ELLENSBURG, Wash. (Oct. 7) – The Central Washington University soccer team fell to Western Oregon, 2-0, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference match-up.
The Wildcats are now 1-7-3 overall and 0-4-2 in GNAC play. The Wolves improve to 2-7-1 overall and 1-4-1 during conference competition.
Central Washington's offense generated chances early on, firing off 11 shots before the Wolves were able to take their first chance. The Wolves first chance was turned aside by
Emily Holt.
Emmi Seelbach nearly broke the scoreless tie with a pair of shots, but both rang off the post.
Mackenzie Nolte and
Sophia Keenan were both stymied by Caitlin Kastelic in the first 11 minutes.
At halftime, the Wildcats have generated 13 shots and held Western Oregon to just one.
Less than 30 seconds into the second half the Wolves put home their first goal. A shot from Kennedy Clay was tipped upward by Holt, but the ball careened off the crossbar and was headed over the goal line by Sydney Thomas.
Looking for the equalizer in the 55
th minute, a corner kick from
Jordan Engman found the head of
Kennedy Anson, but Kastelic was able to keep the ball out.
Whitney Lowe fired a shot goalward in the 57
th minute that was turned away by the Wolves' keeper.
The Wolves scored again in the 58
th minute on a 35-yard shot from Meli Cortez that found the upper corner and a 2-0 advantage for Western Oregon.
Central generated two more shots in the second half, but neither found their way to the back of the net.
The Wildcats finished with 18 shots, six on net. They held the Wolves to four shots. Central was awarded seven corner kicks.
Central Washington is back in action on Thursday, Oct. 12 at Seattle Pacific University. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
