Wildcats Down Nighthawks 80-67 at Town Toyota Center in Wenatchee

WENATCHEE, Wash. -- The Central Washington University men's basketball team defeated Northwest Nazarene 80-67 Tuesday night at the Town Toyota Center in Wenatchee to improve to 6-4 on the season and 2-2 in conference play.
 
The Nighthawks fall to 6-3 on the season and picks up their first Great Northwest Athletic Conference loss and now stands at 2-1.
 
Jawan Stepney led the Wildcats with 16 points on 7 of 14 shooting and added six rebounds and five assists.  Khalil Shabazz poured in 15 points and tied the team lead with seven rebounds and three steals.  Coleman Sparling and Fuquan Niles round out the Wildcats offensive attack with 10 points each.
 
Central shot 46.8 percent from the field and nailed 16 of 19 from the free throw line.  The Nighthawks made 37.5 percent of their shots as the CWU defense held the visitors in check.  Northwest Nazarene forward Maurice Jones entered the game averaging 21 points and 10 rebounds, but was held to eight points and six rebounds on 2 of 7 shooting.
 
The Wildcats led 38-24 at the half due to hot shooting from Stepney and Niles.  The duo combined to shoot 9 for 14 in the stanza that included three monstrous dunks by Niles.
 
Northwest Nazarene cut the Wildcats 14 point halftime lead to eight within the first three minutes of the second half before back-to-back triples by Sparling and Woodruff pushed the CWU lead back to 14. 
 
Another NNU push narrowed the CWU margin to six as the Wildcats went without a field goal for over five minutes of action.  A Jerome Bryant three at 10:06 gave CWU the spark they needed and helped pace the Wildcats to the 80-67 victory.
 
Neither team shot particularly well from three point range as both squads launched 21 triples apiece, with the Wildcats making six to NNU's five.
 
Khalil Thompson led all scorers with 22 points for NNU.  He scored 15 in the second half, including eight in the first four minutes.  Obi Megwa also scored in double figures for the Nighthawks with 16 points.
 
The Wildcats will take a break and return to action Dec. 30 at 4 p.m. against Linfield.
