ELLENSBURG, Wash. – The Central Washington University men's basketball team shot over 63-percent from the field, defeating Simon Fraser University 90-76 on Senior Night at Nicholson Pavilion.
The Clan fall to 3-23 on the season, and 1-17 in Great Northwest Conference play. The Wildcats snap their eight-game losing streak and improve to 13-11 and 8-10 in the GNAC.
Central Washington sits in a tie for seventh place with Seattle Pacific, and are one game back from the sixth and final seed in the GNAC Tournament. Northwest Nazarene, Montana State Billings, and Saint Martin's are all tied at 9-9, occupying the fourth through sixth spots in the conference.
The Wildcats were red hot from start to finish, shooting 63.8 percent from the field (37 of 58), connecting on 10 of 24 from three-point range. Central Washington was extremely effective in the paint, scoring 46 points down low, which is a season high, and got 30 points from its bench.
"We turned good shots into better shots, which was far different from our last few outings," CWU Head Coach
Greg Sparling said. "We did a good job of getting to the paint and finishing. Honestly, this is how we played at the begging of the season and when we do that we are exciting to watch and a tough team to play."
Seniors
Dom Hunter,
Chris-Michael Garret and
Terry Dawn each played their final home game of their careers and each got the starting nod, the first ever for Garret. Hunter scored a game high 27 points on 10 of 15 shooting, 6 of 9 from three. Garret went 3 for 5 with six points, five rebounds and a career-high six assists. Dawn finished with eight points 10 points and eight rebounds.
Fuquan Niles added his sixth double-double of the season, posting 13 points and 10 rebounds. Eight of his points came of two handed slams, two in each half.
Jawan Stepney came off the bench for the first time this season and added 12 points.
Naim Ladd had his best performance since returning from injury, with nine points on 4 of 7 shooting.
Central held the Clan to a 40.9-percent shooting clip and forced the visitors into 14 turnovers, which were converted into 13 points on the other end.
J.J. Pankratz led Simon Fraser with 19 points, followed by Michael Provenzano who had 11 points and five assists.
The Wildcats wrap up its regular season next week when they travel to the State of Alaska to take on Alaska (Feb. 23) and Alaska Anchorage (Feb. 25) with hopes of earning a berth in the GNAC Tournament.
