PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Central Washington University baseball team swept both of its games against Western Oregon University Sunday afternoon in Portland, improving to 11-9 on the season and 5-5 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. Central Washington won game one 6-3, and shut out the Wolves in the night cap 4-0.
Conor Plaisance accounted for 60-percent of the offensive production, driving in six runs on three hits, two of which were homeruns. Dylan Freyer also had an impressive day at the plate, going 5 for 8 with an RBI and four runs scored.
"Great day for Conor, there isn't much more to be said," CWU Head Coach
Desi Storey said. "He stayed balanced and in the middle of the yard, really hit all over the place. That what we need from him as we move forward."
Plaisance had a big game for the Wildcats in the opener, going 2 for 4 with two homeruns, a solo shot in the fifth and a two run blast in the seventh, driving in three runs. Dylan Freyer aided the offense, going 3 for 5 with a RBI and two runs scored.
Jake Levin got the start on the bump for Central Washington with six strong innings of work to improve to 3-1 on the season. Levin allowed four hits, two earned runs, and struck out four batters. Reliever
Kyle Blankenship hurled in the seventh and eighth innings allowing one run and one hit against seven batters over that span.
Christopher Dalto closed things out for CWU, putting the Wolves down in order to secure the 6-3 win, and earning his third save of the season.
Plaisance's hot hitting continued in game two driving home three runs on a bases clearing double in the third inning to give CWU an early 3-0 advantage.
That was all the support starting pitcher
Mackenzie Gaul needed as he kept the WOU bats at bay, allowing just four hits in the complete game shutout. Gaul did not walk a single batter in the contest, and struck out one. He faced just six more than the minimum, needing just 90 pitches to complete the task and improve to 4-1 on the season.
"Both of our starters were outstanding today," Storey added. "Jake did a great job, got us into the sixth and our bullpen cleaned things up. On top of the good pitching by both Levin and Gaul, we played outstanding defense, and when you combine great pitching with great defense and timely hitting, you will win most games."
The Wildcats and Wolves will finish up the four game set tomorrow starting at 11 a.m.
