Wildcats Claw Cavaliers, 6-4

ELLENSBURG, Wash.- For the second-straight day, the Central Washington University baseball team defeated Concordia University (Ore.), 6-4, on Sunday afternoon.

CWU (14-11, 8-7 GNAC) took a 2-0 lead in the third inning and increased its lead with two runs in the fifth and seventh en-route to the win. The Cavaliers were scoreless until the sixth inning when they put one run on the board. They tried to rally in the eighth with three runs, but their comeback fell short.

Tyler Hoefer relieved Davis and threw 2 and 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on five hits with three strikeouts. Kyle Blankenship threw the final inning and struck out every batter he faced to earn the save.

Kyle Stahl went 4-for-4 with two RBIS to lead Central Washington at the plate and senior Jake Levin hit his second homerun of the weekend into deep left center.

Dylan Freyre kicked off CWU's offensive production in the third inning when he drove in the first run of the day after doubling down the leftfield line. Yi-Fan Pan scored on a single by Conor Plaisance.

In the fifth, Levin homered to extend Central's lead to 3-0. Stahl singled to left to drive in the Wildcat's fourth run of the day.

Concordia's Justin Taylor scored in the sixth inning on a wild pitch to reduce the scoring margin to 4-1.

The seventh inning featured another two runs by CWU. Freyre and Levin walked to lead off the inning and Plaisance's sacrifice bunt allowed the runners to advance to second and third. A single to the left-center gap by Stahl brought Freyre home. James Smith III closed CWU's scoring effort when he crossed home plate following a wild pitch to take the 6-1 advantage.

Despite a three-run inning by the Cavaliers in the top of the eight inning, the Wildcats were able to preserve the victory, 6-4.

Central Washington's second game against Concordia was postponed after two and a half innings due to rain. The teams will resume play on Friday, April 7 when Central travels to Portland, Ore. followed by a pair of doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday.

The Wildcats will play next Friday, March 31 against Montana State University Billings at 12 p.m.
