PORTLAND, Ore. (Apr. 8) – The Central Washington University baseball team came from behind in both ends of its doubleheader against Concordia University (Ore.) Central is now 19-13 on the season and 13-9 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.
After falling behind 4-0 in the first five innings, the Wildcats woke up in a big way.
A bases loaded ground out brought home
Justin Hampson for Central's first run.
Jake Levin then drove in
Ty Deckwa and
Kyle Stahl with a single to left field.
Christopher Dalto followed with a single of his own, scoring
Conor Plaisance and Levin. The five-run sixth inning gave CWU a 5-4 lead.
After giving up their one-run advantage in the bottom of the sixth, Levin swatted a solo shot to center field in the eighth. Stahl followed with a bunt single, which scored
James Smith III.
The Wildcats closed the scoring in the ninth with a two-run double from Dalto, scoring Plaisance and Levin.
Kyle Thompson got the win. He tossed three innings of relief and allowed just one run, on one hit.
Concordia struck first again in game two. The Cavaliers put up a pair of runs in the fourth for a 2-0 lead. They extended the lead to 5-0 with a three-run bomb in the fifth.
The Cavaliers' pitching staff held the Wildcats scoreless until the seventh inning.
Brice McCulloch got the Wildcats on the board first with a sacrifice fly, bringing home Levin.
Yi-an Pan then singled through the left side, bringing Smith in. Stahl found greenery on a single into left, allowing Dalto to score. A single by
Rory Graf-Brennen brought in Pan and Stahl. After seven innings the score was level at 7-7.
The Wildcats scored in the top of the eighth on a bases loaded hit by pitch. Concordia responded with a run of their own to keep the game alive.
In the ninth, Graf-Brennen notched a solo homerun to right for a 7-6 lead.
Tyler Hoefer earned the win in relief. He tossed 1.2 innings of shutout baseball.
The Wildcats and Cavaliers are back in action tomorrow (Apr. 9) for another doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
