PORTLAND, Ore. (Apr. 9) – The Central Washington University baseball team took both games from Concordia University in its Great Northwest Athletic Conference series, completing the four-game sweep.
"I don't care who you play," CWU Head Coach
Desi Storey said. "Anytime you can go out and take four in a weekend is an impressive feat. Our bats clicked this weekend and we found some consistency on day two that allowed us to score multiple runs in multiple innings."
In the second inning of game one,
Jake Levin took a 2-2 over the left field fence, giving the Wildcats a 1-0 advantage.
Both pitching staffs held the opposition's offense quiet until the eighth inning.
Justin Hampson laid down a bunt single which brought home
Kyle Stahl and a 2-0 advantage for Central Washington.
The Wildcats proved to need the extra support as Concordia got on the scoreboard in bottom of the eighth. Reid Penney brought home Justin Walsh on a fielder's choice for the Cavaliers first run.
A double steal in the top of the eighth gave
Christopher Dalto and
Ty Deckwa stolen bases. The throw from the catcher skipped away and Dalto rushed home for added insurance.
Dalto's run gave the Wildcats breathing room in the ninth after pinch runner Andrew Barrera scored on a sacrifice bunt, cutting the score to 3-2.
Dalto picked up a two-inning save.
Griffin Davis got the win, hurling seven innings of one-run ball. The righty allowed just three hits, three walks, and struck out five hitters.
Levin got the scoring going in the series final game with a double in the fourth inning, scoring
Rory Graf-Brennen.
James Smith III followed Levin with a single of his own, scoring Levin and advancing Plaisance to second.
"Those guys had a great weekend," Storey said. "We found some consistency through the middle of the lineup today. Nearly everyone contributed."
Dalto then hit a two-run single, scoring Plaisance and Smith, giving the Wildcats a 4-0 lead.
Smith then singled home Levin and Plaisance in the top of the fifth for a 6-0 lead.
The Cavaliers struck back in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run single by Tanner Williams.
A single by Graf-Brennen in the top of the sixth brought home
Yi-an Pan for a 7-2 lead.
The Cavaliers scratched one run across in the bottom of the seventh, but could not get all five runs back to force extra innings.
JJ Asinas tossed his first complete game of the season. The freshman allowed three runs, on five hits, with four walks, and five strikeouts.
"He did a great job," Storey said of Asinas. "He will be sore tomorrow, that's his longest outing to date."
Central Washington is back in action on Friday (Apr. 14) and Saturday (Apr. 15) at Saint Martin's University for another pair of GNAC doubleheaders.
