ELLENSBURG, Wash. (Sept. 17) – Emily Holt made nine saves as the Central Washington University women's soccer team played Great Northwest Athletic Conference foe Concordia University (Ore.) to a 0-0 draw.
The Wildcats are now 1-3-2 on the season, while the Cavaliers move to 3-2-1.
"We have great battles with Concordia, they're well coached," CWU Head Coach
Michael Farrand said. "Grant [Lindy] is a great guy and has done well with the program and their transition to Division II. If you want to make it to the conference tournament and into the final four, they're one of the better teams you'll have to go through."
In the last three meetings between Concordia and Central Washington, only two goals have been scored.
Holt nabbed her first save of the contest in the third minute, when Maddie Misi sent a shot goalward.
The Cavaliers chances mounted in the opening 10 minutes, including a trio of shots in succession, one of which rang off the post.
Whitney Lowe found a chance in the eighth minute, but Anna Miller came up with the save for the Cavaliers.
The Wildcats got their next chance in the 15
th minute with a pair of shots from Lowe and
Sophia Keenan. The initial shot from Lowe was turned aside by Miller and the rebound caromed to Keenan whose shot went wide right.
Lowe found another chance in the 17
th minute, but again Miller made the stop.
Chances for both sides grew throughout the first half, but play in the middle third stalled for both sides. The halftime whistle sounded with a 0-0 score.
Concordia found brief momentum in the opening 10 minutes of the second half, firing a pair of shots toward Holt. Both shots were rebuffed by the sophomore keeper.
The Wildcats fired off a pair of shots in the 58
th minute, but could not find the back of the net.
Holt made another save in the 70
th minute on shot from Kyra Radcliffe, keeping the score at 0-0.
With just three and a half minutes remaining in regulation,
Mackenzie Nolte made her way through the Cavaliers' defense, but her shot went wide right.
The first 10 minutes of extra time were relatively quiet. Concordia took a pair of shots, while the Wildcats took one, but neither team found the winner.
In the 103
rd minute of play the Cavaliers broke through the Wildcats' back line and generated a high-level scoring opportunity. Gabrielle Ewing drove inside the 18 alone, but Holt came off her line to stymie the attack and keep the game at level pegging.
Central managed a pair of chances in the final minutes, but the winning marker eluded both sides and play finished in a 0-0 draw.
The Wildcats tallied 20 shots, while Concordia finished with 21. The Wildcats were awarded five corner kicks, while they held Concordia to just two. Holt earned her first clean sheet of the season.
Central Washington is back in action on Saturday (Sept. 23) against Simon Fraser University. Kick-off is scheduled for noon at the CWU Soccer Complex.
