ELLENSBURG, Wash. (Sept. 23) – The Central Washington University women's soccer team fell in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference match to Simon Fraser University, 4-2.
The Wildcats are now 1-4-2 overall and 0-1-1 in GNAC play. The Clan improve to 3-4-0 on the season and 1-2-0 in the GNAC.
Mackenzie Nolte struck early for her fifth goal of the season.
Whitney Lowe threaded a through ball through Simon Fraser's back line and Nolte took a touch before firing a strike past Priya Sandhu for a 1-0 lead.
Simon Fraser found the equalizer in the 28
th minute. An attempted header clearance from the Wildcats was sent backwards onto the foot of Jenna Baxter, who found Emma Pringle. Pringle's shot found its way into the net and levelled the score at 1-1.
A red card put the Wildcats behind the eight-ball in the 39
th minute, forcing them to play down a player for the remainder of the contest.
The Clan took advantage of being on a power play and scored off a corner in the 45
th minute for a 2-1 lead.
Simon Fraser searched for an insurance marker early in the second half and capitalized in the 49
th minute. Christina Dickson finished on a breakaway for a 3-1 advantage.
Nolte cut the deficit back to one in the 66
th minute.
Jordan Engman fed in a through ball past the back line and Nolte finished her second of the contest.
"I thought we did a great job making the game 3-2, playing a man down," CWU Head Coach
Michael Farrand said. "We are in trouble if we keep giving up goals like this. We have much to improve for on Thursday."
Simon Fraser went back up by two goals in the 89
th minute on a goal from Pringle.
Emily Holt finished the match with 10 saves. The Wildcats tallied 19 shots and seven corners, while holding Simon Fraser to just two corners.
"We certainly created chances," Farrand added. "We put people in positions to be successful and we need to keep doing that. We've got good players and we need to continue to give them a chance going forward, even if we are a player down."
The Wildcats take on No. 1 Western Washington on Thursday (Sept. 28) at 3:00 p.m. in Ellensburg.
