Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Soccer Falls to No. 1 WWU, 2-0

ELLENSBURG, Wash. (Sept. 28) – The Central Washington University women's soccer team fell to No. 1 Western Washington University, 2-0.

The Wildcats fall to 1-5-2 overall and 0-2-1 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.  The Vikings stay perfect at 8-0-0 and 4-0-0 in the GNAC.

Western struck first, scoring in the 28th minute.  Liv Larson took the corner and goalkeeper Emily Holt punched it away, but a scrum ensued inside the six and Sophie Butterfield put home the goal.

"I thought we could have done a much better job on that corner, but they work hard on every goal," CWU Head Coach Michael Farrand said.  "I liked how we battled back through the rest of the first half and got back on our feet again."

Following the goal, the Wildcats held the Vikings without a shot until three seconds prior to the half time whistle.

The Vikings added a second goal in the 84th minute to seal the victory.  Malia Maack sent a through ball in the air to the top of the 18 that Gabriela Pelogi headed into the back of the net.

Holt finished with 13 saves.  The Wildcats totaled four shots and two corners.  The Vikings finished with 29 shots, 15 on goal.  Central held the Vikings to half of their usual offensive output during GNAC games.

"We're in a tough spot," Farrand noted.  "We get bits and pieces that are effective for us.  We had a formation change and I think that off set us a bit up top.  We wanted to play through the middle of the field, but we got caught on the edges.  If you look at our touches on the inside, we lost our inside middles."

The Wildcats take on Saint Martin's in Lacey on Saturday (Sept. 30).  Kick-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.

"I liked the effort," Farrand finished.  "We still fought, it's probably the best effort we've had so far.  Going to Saint Martin's, all we need to worry about is who we are."
