SAN DIEGO, Calif. (Sept. 2) – The Central Washington University women's soccer team lost its season opener to No. 10 University of California San Diego, 2-1.
The Wildcats are 0-1-0 on the season, while the Tritons improve to 2-0-0.
"Opening against the number 10 team in nation it was a great opening game for us," CWU Head Coach
Michael Farrand said. "We played well in the first 15-20 minutes. Got stuck a bit after that and played a bit too direct. We need to play possession style soccer. We battled hard and fought throughout the entire game, so I'm proud of how we were able to stay in the game."
Whitney Lowe found the shot sheet first, firing a shot on Tritons' keeper Angelica Ramos in the third minute. Ramos turned the shot aside for a save.
Emily Holt made her first save of the season in the sixth minute, when Katie O'Laughlin sent a shot goalward.
"Emily was awesome in goal for us," Farrand noted of his sophomore keeper. She made some saves for us and made great decisions."
The Tritons' offense pressed the Wildcats' defense in the first half. Three shots were sent wide prior to the 18
th minute, but each time the Wildcats came away clean.
UC San Diego struck first in the 24
th minute. The Wildcats conceded a corner and, in the ensuing scrum, the ball found its way to the boot of Mary Reilly who found the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.
The Tritons took three more shots in the opening 45 minutes, but did not connect again. The Wildcats took a pair of shots around the 30
th minute, but could not find the score line.
UCSD struck again in the 58
th minute. O'Laughlin took a mishandled clearance and buried it in the Wildcats' net for a 2-0 advantage.
Mackenzie Nolte cut the deficit in half in the 85
th minute. The Tritons couldn't find a way forward into the Wildcats' third, so they backpedaled to find more space. As the Wildcats' pressure mounted, the Tritons played the back to their keeper. Nolte pressed hard into the box, forcing Ramos to make a panicked clearance. Nolte blocked the attempted clearance and sent the ball over the goal line for her first of the season.
"Mack's effort to work hard and create a goal helped turn it around," Farrand finished. "We had a great finish to the match tonight."
The Wildcats play Cal State San Bernardino on Monday (Sept. 4) at 8 a.m. due to the extreme heat that has gripped California.
