LACEY, Wash. (Oct. 11) – Makinzie Packwood scored a pair of goals and
Lexsi Manning buried the golden goal in the Central Washington University (2-6-4, 2-3-2) women's soccer team's 3-2 double overtime win against Saint Martin's University (5-9-0, 1-7-0).
Packwood scored consecutive goals in the 32
nd and 80
th minutes. Her first goal brought the game level at 1-1, before her second goal gave the Wildcats a 2-1 lead.
Manning buried her golden goal winner in the 103
rd minute in the second overtime period.
The Wildcats' relentless offense took 21 shots, while they held Saint Martin's to just seven. The Wildcats also received eight corners to the Saints' three.
"I think this game shows the progress we have made this year," CWU Head Coach
Michael Farrand said. "Not only did we find the tying goal, but a go-ahead goal. The freshmen connected well together today. I think it's a great effort on our part and it shows the growth we've made as a team. We fought all game, fell behind, but never gave up. Right now we are hot and playing good soccer. We are glad to be going home with three points and a chance to play our way into the GNACs."
Packwood was the offensive catalyst for the Wildcats. The freshman striker fired six shots, five on goal, in the game.
She got the Wildcat offense going in the fourth minute, nearly giving the Wildcats an early 1-0 lead. A Saints' defender blocked her shot to preserve the scoreless tie.
Emily Thomson made her first stop of the afternoon on a shot from Kiersten Madsen in the seventh minute. Thomson made three stops in the game, after making stopping two penalties and making eight saves on Saturday against No. 18 WWU.
The Saints struck first. Shea McKnight took a pass from Jolene Kvinsland and fired a shot from the top of the box, beating Thomson and giving SMU a 1-0 advantage.
Packwood levelled the score in the 32
nd minute with her first of the day. She gathered a pass from
Sydney Lowe and fired him home, levelling the score at 1-1.
The Wildcats got a chance in the 41
st minute on a corner kick from Manning.
Emily Minogue fired a shot just wide and the first half concluded knotted at 1-1.
Lowe and
Sophia Keenan bombarded Ali Koehler, the Saints' keeper, with shots early in the second half. Lowe's first shot was stopped by the Saints' keeper, before Keenan blasted a shot two minutes later. The ensuing rebound led to a shot from Lowe that whistled wide of the goal frame.
Lowe got another chance in the 55
th minute, but once again Koehler came away with the save.
Bella Brown nearly slipped a shot past the keeper in the 57
th minute, but Koehler was able to keep the game level.
Kennedy Anson fired a shot goalward in the 69
th minute, giving way to a corner kick from
Jordan Engman. Packwood fired a pair of shots in the chaos, both were snuffed out by a Saints' defender.
In the 80
th minute,
Olivia Sloan found Packwood open near the top of the box. The freshman striker buried her second goal of the game just underneath the crossbar, giving CWU a 2-1 lead.
A late corner kick in the 90
th minute gave way to Rose Robbins scoring the equalizer to force extra time.
After the first overtime period ended with neither team taking a shot, the Wildcats needed just one shot in the second period to win it.
Lowe skipped a low service across the middle of the 18 in the 103
rd minute, past Packwood, to a waiting Manning, who slipped her shot past the keeper from five yards out for a 3-2 victory.
The Wildcats are back at home on Saturday (Oct. 16) for a GNAC match against No. 6 Concordia (Ore.). Kick-off is scheduled for noon.
