Ellensburg, Wash –Anxious to start a run towards the end of the season, the Central Washington University volleyball team steamrolled over the Western Oregon Wolves 3-0 (25-12, 25-18, 25-21) on Saturday afternoon.
"We played good defense for sure," head coach
Mario Andaya said. "Western Oregon was a little out of sorts. I saw us taking advantage of some free balls and deflections. Our hitters were really working hard in transition. Overall it was a strong night for us."
The Wildcats (16-5, 10-4) and Wolves (15, 3-11) traded points in the early stages of the first set. The Wildcats led 4-3 when Mckenna Smith stepped the service line. Smith sparked a 6-0 run that featured a pair of aces. The Wildcats took advantage of a .571 team hitting percentage to cruise to a 25-12 win in the first set.
The second set was 6-5 in favor of the Wolves. The Wildcats got on a roll, rattling off a 9-1 run that put them up 14-7.
Bridgette Webb got the team's offensive going with a monster kill.
Makala Swart smashed three kills that were a huge part of that run. The Wildcat offense continued to flow, as they worked their way to a 25-18 set win.
The Wildcats opened the third set with an 8-0 run. Bit by bit, the Wolves chipped away at the Wildcat lead. The Wildcats led 13-10, when the Wolves burst past them with a 7-1 run, taking a 17-14 lead. Swart had a pair of kills followed by an ace from
Gabrielle Aihara. Western Oregon took a time out, but it didn't halt the Wildcats from using an 11-4 run to close out the set, taking it 25-21.
Swart led the group with 13 kills, on an excellent .407 hitting percentage. She added 10 digs, adding up to a solid night for the Wildcats.
Shelby Mauritson was the only other Wildcat with double figure kills with 10. The Wildcats had a great night serving, racking up eight aces. The team was strong defensively, holding the Wolves to a .130 hitting percentage.
Kyla Morgan played a key role in that, leading everyone with 14 digs.
"Kyla is doing Kyla," Andaya said. "She's our rock back there. She's doing so many good things that you almost expect it every night now. We're blessed to have her back there."
The Wildcats take to the road for the final time in the GNAC schedule. It starts with a trip to Seattle Pacific on Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
