Wildcats Draw 1-1 to No. 18 WWU After Wallace's Equalizer

ELLENSBURG, Wash. (Oct. 6) – The Central Washington University women's soccer team (1-6-4, 1-3-2) played to a 1-1 draw in the first home night game at Tomlinson Stadium in program history.

KK Wallace headed home the equalizer in the 70th minute, pushing a service from Kennedy Anson low to the far post, to force overtime.

"I was waiting far post," Wallace said afterward.  "I knew Kennedy [Anson] would get the ball across to me, so I just followed it across and put it away.  Ken always knows how to deliver an awesome service like that."

Madison Bradley got the Wildcats' offense going in the eighth minute.  After an offside call against the Vikings, the CWU counterattack generated allowed Bradley to break loose for a well-place shot.  Natalie Dierickx turned the shot aside for her first save of the contest.

A corner kick for Western in the 22nd minute from Taylor Hallquist found the head of Gabriela Pelogi, but Emily Thomson nabbed it out of the air for her first save.

Thomson was a stalwart in net for the Wildcats, making eight saves on the day and acted as a dominating presence inside the 18 for Central.

I think the support tonight from our fans, alumni, and parents was awesome," CWU Head Coach Michael Farrand said afterward.  "Emily [Thomson] today played an outstanding game.  KK's goal is a great sequence of putting the ball back into play.  She's worked so hard this year and had a great season for us.  We had a few chances to finish the game and possibly grab the win with Bailey [Martoncik] late.  Western is a perennial power and being able to keep with them is huge for us."

The Vikings nearly broke the 0-0 score in the 26th minute.  Liv Larson broke free from the defense and fired a shot from close range, but it was parried by a sliding Thomson.  The ensuing rebound generated a second chance for Larson, but it missed wide by inches.

Central got their own chance on goal in the 39thSydney Lowe fired a shot that was blocked by a defender, allowing Makinzie Packwood to try her luck.  Packwood's shot also found a defender, before Lowe gathered in the second effort and fired a third shot on goal. Dierickx made the save to preserve the scoreless tie.

A late header from Alice Hiebert in the 41st minute was the last chance either side had to score in the first half.

Chaos erupted in the second half.  In the 52nd minute a Viking attacker was dragged down in the 18, awarding the Vikings with their first of three penalty kicks in the game.  Zoe Milburn took the penalty and looked low and away from Thomson, but the sophomore keeper made a diving save to keep the game level.

The Vikings were given another penalty in the 58th minute and this time Jordyn Bartelson made it count.  She beat Thomson low, giving the Vikings a 1-0 advantage.

Thomson was called on again in the 60th minute, keeping a shot from Dayana Diaz out.

Devine forced Dierickx to make a save in the 66th minute with a shot from outside the 18.

Wallace struck in the 70th minute.  Anson sent an aerial cross into the box and Wallace beat Peyton Chick to the aerial service and headed it past Dierickx.

After 90 minutes, the teams were deadlocked at 1-1 and forced overtime.

In the first overtime period the Vikings were once again the beneficiary of a penalty kick.  Bartelson aimed for her second penalty goal of the game, but Thomson played the hero once more and parried the penalty effort.

Bailey Martoncik nearly netted the golden goal winner, but her shot missed high in the 100th minute.

The second overtime period passed quietly, as only Taylor Hallquist managed to take a shot.  After 110 minutes of play, the final whistle sounded with a level score of 1-1.

The Wildcats are on the road next Thursday (Oct. 11) as they travel to Lacey, Washington for a GNAC matchup with Saint Martin's.  Kick-off is scheduled for noon.
