ELLENSBURG, Wash. (Mar. 24) – The Central Washington University (14-10, 9-5) baseball team scored in every inning they came to the plate in game two of a doubleheader split against Saint Martin's University (4-18, 3-11). The Saints took game one 8-5, before the Wildcats took the back end 10-4.
"In game two we hit to our capability," CWU Head Coach
Desi Storey said. "We made adjustments and made the most out of every situation we could. Scoring in every inning is something to be proud of. However, we weren't at our best in the field. I thought Connor did a great job for us in game two on the mound. He was efficient with his pitches and attacked the zone early."
Griffin Davis (2-2) got the call in game one. The right-hander went five innings and allowed eight hits, six runs, three walks, and struck out two hitters.
Offensively,
Justin Hampson continued his success at the plate with a three-hit game.
Dustin Braun. Jimmy Smith, and
Christopher Dalto each recorded a pair of hits, while Smith drove in all five of the Wildcats' runs.
The Saints pushed across six runs in the first inning, culminating in a grand slam by Micah McNicholl for a 6-0 lead.
Both offenses went quiet until Smith drove in a pair of runs with a single to left.
The Saints sent two more runners across the plate in the sixth, reclaiming a six-run advantage.
An inning later, in the bottom of the seventh, Smith unloaded on a 1-0 pitch and took it over the scoreboard for a three-run blast.
Matthew Dunaway was able to keep the Wildcats' bats quiet for the remainder of the contest, earning his first save, and capturing an 8-5 victory.
Stevenson (4-2) went the distance in game two, the third time in four starts, earning his fourth victory of the year. He allowed seven hits, four runs, one earned, one walk, and struck out six.
Braun drove in the game's first run, singling through the right side in the bottom of the first to score
Mitch Lesmeister.
Tristin Parton later reached on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded, thanks to a throwing error which allowed Smith and Braun to score on the play.
Braun extended the Wildcats' led to 4-0 in the bottom of the second with a doubled down the left field line, scoring Lesmeister for the second time.
A passed ball in the third inning allowed Parton to score, giving Central a 5-0 advantage.
Michael Peter then sent a ball back from whence it came, right back up the middle, for a single which scored Heinevetter.
The Saints pushed across their first two runs in the fourth on a throwing error, cutting the score to 6-2.
In the next frame, the Wildcats scored a pair of runs. The first came on a sacrifice fly from Heinevetter, before
Robert Ball roped his first double of the game to left as Hampson came wheeling around to score.
Smith then singled in the bottom of the fifth, scoring Lesmeister for a third time, for a 9-2 advantage.
Ball went to work again at the plate in the sixth. He laced his second double of the contest on a one-hop to left center and drove in Parton, giving CWU a 10-2 lead.
The saints scored a pair of runs in the seventh, but Stevenson held the line for a 10-4 victory.
The Wildcats are back in action tomorrow (Mar. 25) for games three and four of the series. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
