MONMOUTH, Ore. (Apr. 29) -- The Central Washington University baseball team dropped both games of its Great northwest Athletic Conference doubleheader against Western Oregon University by scores of 8-5 and 4-3.
"We weren't consistent," CWU Head Coach
Desi Storey said. "We need to be more consistent at the plate and in the field."
The Wildcats sent a runner across the plate first in game one. A balk allowed
Tristin Parton to score, giving CWU a 1-0 lead.
Central extended its lead to 3-0 in the top of the fourth.
Michael Heinevetter singled through the right side, scoring
Jaden Hassell, before Parton hit an infield single to score
Yi-an Pan.
The Wolves got two runs back in the fourth, cutting the Wildcat lead to just 3-2.
A bunt single from
Robert Ball brought Hassell home from third in the top of the fifth, giving the Wildcats an insurance run at 4-2. The Wolves quickly erased the insurance in the bottom of the inning.
With runners on the corners and one out in the top of the sixth, rain forced the game to halt. After 48 minutes the teams returned and
James Smith III immediately hit a sacrifice fly for the 5-3 lead.
A defensive meltdown in the bottom of the frame gave way to four Western Oregon runs. The Wolves tallied four runs in the sixth on just two hits, but they were helped along by four errors. Leading 6-5, the Wolves did not look back and took game one 8-5.
Central once again gained a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Parton doubled home Ball, but the Wolves picked up two runs in the bottom of the third to take a 2-1 advantage. They added a third run in the fourth.
Ty Deckwa reached with one out in the top of the sixth inning, bringing Smith to the plate. Smith took an 0-1 offering and launched it for a two-run homerun to left center, tying the game at 3-3.
After a scoreless seventh inning, the Wildcats and Wolves headed to extra innings. The Wildcats were held scoreless in the top of the eighth.
After getting Jared McDonald to foul out and Nyles Nygaard went down swinging, Spencer Bennion hit a 2-2 breaking ball over the right center wall for a walk-off homerun.
The Wildcats are back in action on Thursday (May 3) for a GNAC doubleheader at Western Oregon. First pitch is scheduled for noon PT.
