PORTLAND, Ore. (Apr. 9) – The Central Washington University (18-16, 13-11) baseball team dropped both games of its doubleheader against Concordia University (Ore.) (13-21, 12-12) in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play by scores of 16-3 and 5-2.
"We aren't playing consistent baseball," CWU Head Coach
Desi Storey said. "We threw it around on defense, we didn't get ahead of batters on the mound, and we didn't adjust at the plate offensively. Game one was great, but we didn't make the necessary adjustments. We need to play our brand of baseball and play to our capabilities, we didn't do that this weekend."
The Cavaliers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, before tacking on three more in the second for a 6-0 advantage. The fifth inning saw another crooked number for the Cavaliers as they scored five runs and an 11-0 lead.
The Wildcats brought their first run around in the top of the sixth.
James Smith III beat out a would-be double play ball at first, allowing
Michael Peter to score from third. Smith then stole second and was driven in by
Justin Hampson.
Concordia's offense went back to work in the bottom half, adding three more runs and taking a 14-13 advantage.
A single from
Jaden Hassell in the eighth made it 14-3, but the Cavaliers added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth for a 16-3 lead.
It was Central Washington's offense that found the scoresheet first in game two. Hassell hit a sacrifice fly in the second for a 1-0 edge. Smith added a second run in the third on a double down the right field line.
The Cavaliers scored in three consecutive innings from the third through the fifth, including three runs in the bottom of the fifth, to take a 5-2 advantage.
The Wildcat pitching staff held the Cavaliers to just five hits in the series finale.
The Wildcats are back in action on Saturday (Apr. 14) as they begin a four-game series at Saint Martin's University. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Lacey, Washington. Currently in the GNAC standings, the Wildcats are third and hold a one-game lead over Concordia (Ore.).
