Packwood's 90th Minute Equalizer Leads to 1-1 Draw at FPU

FRESNO, Calif. (Aug. 30) – The Central Washington University (0-0-1) women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw at Fresno Pacific University (0-0-1).  Makinzie Packwood's first collegiate goal came as an equalizer in the 90th minute, forcing a pair of overtime periods.

"We were excited to play a tough opponent," CWU Head Coach Mike Farrand said.  "Fresno is a good program.  They're super physical and super direct.  I'm extremely impressed with who we are together.  We struggled in games like this last year, but we found some resolve in the back and the girls never gave up.  They fought all the way through.  Scoring an equalizer goal with 26 seconds left shows us a glimpse of our potential.  Player of the match for us was Kennedy Anson.  She held the game together through the midfield and she made strong tackles with purpose all night."

Emily Thomson made a trio of saves in the first half to keep the score line level at 0-0.  The sophomore keeper was tested first in the 22nd minute on a drive from Jessica Dondlinger.  Just 66 seconds later, Rachel Anderson fired a shot goalward that Thomson kept out.   Thomson's third save of the first half came in the 38th minute, on another shot from Anderson, once again preserving the 0-0 score.

Anson nearly broke the 0-0 tie in the 43rd minute, but a Sunbird defender was able to bail out her keeper, before Packwood rung the post with a shot.  The score sat at 0-0 as both teams headed to halftime.

The scoreboard shifted from a pair of zeros to 1-0 in the 62nd minute.  The Sunbirds played a long ball into the 18 where Alyssa Kincade was able to chip the Wildcats' back line and her pass was met by Whitney Snow, who headed the effort into the back of the Wildcats' net for the 1-0 lead.

A late corner kick in the 87th minute, taken by Emily Russell, generated a shot as the Wildcats piled attackers into the Sunbird's third but the score line stayed at 1-0 in favor of the Sunbirds.

After missing just wide earlier in the match, Packwood got another chance at goal and delivered.  After dispossessing a Sunbird defender, Packwood headed home a lifted pass from Russell with just 26 seconds remaining in regulation for a 1-1 score.

The first overtime period passed rather uneventfully, but the second extra period saw chances for both sides.

The Sunbirds got a chance at a golden goal in the 107th minute, but the shot was blocked by a Wildcat defender.  Central had a pair of corners in the second OT period, and a shot from Paige Devine that was blocked, but couldn't find the back of the net.  After 110 minutes of play, the match concluded as a 1-1 draw.

The Wildcats play at Stanislaus State on Saturday (Sept. 1).  Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
