Wildcats Fend Off Eagles in Cali

Irvine, Calif - The Central Washington University volleyball team showed poise in the closing moments of the second and third sets against Concordia University, As the Wildcats held off the Eagles to complete the sweep 3-0 (25-16, 25-23, 25-23) on Saturday afternoon. 

The Wildcats (5-1) and Eagles (1-6) traded runs early in the first set, before a 10-4 run gave the Wildcats an 18-10 lead. They'd close out the first set 25-16. The Wildcats trailed 22-17 in the second set, before a come-from-behind effort gave them the narrow 25-23 set win. In the third set, the Eagles fought from underneath, trailing 21-17 before tying the set at 23. Appropriately, Makala Swart gave the Wildcats the win with a pair of kills, ended the set 25-23. 

"I thought we stayed very active and transitioned well in long rallies," head coach Mario Andaya said. "Our middles did a nice job and worked hard to get the ball, which is something we're getting better at."  Swart led all players with 18 kills on the match, while Madison Weg accumulated 10 kills. Sarah Joffs was extremely efficient, racking up seven kills on a .438 hitting percentage. Gabrielle Aihara assisted on 45 of the Wildcats' 49 kills. 

Shelby Mauritson impacted the game defensively with a team high 20 digs. Mauritson contributed to the offense with seven kills. Kyla Morgan had a nice afternoon with 17 digs and two service aces. As a team, the Wildcats held the Eagles to a .197 hitting percentage. 

"Gaby continues to lead the offense and give our hitters a chance," Andaya said. "Shelby was very good on defense and we converted well off her touches." 

The Wildcats take on CSU East Bay in the final game of their California road trip today at 5:30 p.m.
