ELLENSBURG, Wash. – The Central Washington University women's soccer team recorded a 2-0 win over Saint Martin's University (2-6-2, 0-2-0) on goals from
Madison Bradley and
Peyton Vogel.
"Bradley is a good poacher and cleaned up a ball really nicely," CWU Head Coach
Michael Farrand said afterward. "Vogel continues to improve. I think the finishing on the end, if you watch how she frames the ball out when it's served, she's in the right spot at the right time. One thing with Vogel is, she puts ball on frame."
Teanna Lathum was the first player to find her way onto the shot chart. She sidestepped a defender and fired a shot which was met by Ali Campigotto.
Central took its first corner in the 10
th minute, leading to a pair of shots from
Sydney Lowe and
Peyton Vogel.
The Wildcats' defense was stout from start to finish, limiting the Saints' opportunities across the center line.
Peyton Devine had a chance to put the Wildcats ahead in the 27
th minute. She blasted a shot towards the upper 90, but Campigotto turned the shot aside.
The Crimson and Black took the lead in the 29
th minute.
Olivia Sloan sent a service towards the top of the six, where it was gathered by Bradley. Her first shot was parried by Campigotto, but Bradley buried the rebound for her first goal of the season and a 1-0 advantage.
Central's offense kept the pressure on Saint Martin's.
Bella Brown whistled a shot just high of the crossbar in the 33
rd minute.
At the end of the first half, Central led 1-0 and outshot Saint Martin's 7-0.
After finding consistent pressure in the first half, the Wildcats continued to press the attack. Vogel blasted her second opportunity in the 47
th minute. Campigotto came to her side's rescue once more, keeping Vogel's effort out.
Saint Martin's found their first chance in the 60
th minute. Kendall Kemp sent a shot over the crossbar.
Brown found herself in another chance at goal in the 61
st minute, but Campigotto was able to haul in the shot.
Lowe and Devine had consecutive chances in the 63
rd and 64
th minutes. Lowe's shot went low and was snuffed out by Campigotto. Devine's shot twisted towards the away post, but again Campigotto made the save to preserve the 1-0 score line.
Central got the brace they were looking for in the 81
st minute.
Maci Parke played a through ball over the top of the Saints, finding Lowe on the right wing. Lowe sent a cross from the side of the 18 to the top of the six, where Vogel hit a one-timed shot to the far corner beyond the keeper's reach for a 2-0 lead.
Saint Martin's had just one more chance at goal. Daeh Lindquist fired a shot at goal, but
Emily Thomson turned it aside.
The Wildcats had nine shots on goal, while Saint Martin's had just one. They also received seven corners to SMU's five. All five corners for the Saints came in the second half.
"Thursday we were unprepared and not ready to play," Farrand added. "I think it shows a lot to who we are to refocus. We had to turn it around on Friday and clean up some things. I think they responded well and found a way to be better together."
Central Washington is back in action on Saturday (Oct. 12) as they travel to Concordia (Ore.) for a GNAC match with the Cavaliers. Kick-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
