Wildcats Host Crossover to Start Regular Season

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – Central Washington University women's basketball is back in action this weekend and this time the games will count. The Wildcats host the CWU West Region Crossover this weekend and battle a pair of non-conference opponents.

SCOUTING STANISLAUS STATE | ROSTER | SCHEDULE | 2018 STATS
The Warriors were picked to tie for 11th overall in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Preseason Coaches Poll. The team went 9-17 with an 8-14 in conference play. The Warriors won three of their last five games, picking up wins over Chico Stat, Cal State San Bernardino and Call State L.A.
 
The Warriors had one player picked as All-CCAA honorable mention: Sophomore forward, Kyanna Davis. Davis was the top scorer for the Warriors in the 2018-19 season, scoring an average 13.4 points per game and 322 points total in the season. Davis was tenth in the CCAA for scoring out of 25 other players. Davis led in rebounds per game with six average and 145 total throughout the season. She was in the top 20 for CCAA rebounding.
 
Davis was 105 for 136 in free throws with a percentage of .772. She had 49 steals averaging two per game landing her the seventh spot for steals in the CCAA.
 
SCOUTING HAWAII PACIFIC | ROSTER | SCHEDULE | 2018 STATS
The Sharks were able to win the PacWest Conference Tournament in 2019. The team was slated to finish second by the league's head coaches in the Preseason Coaches Poll. The Sharks who were 23-9 overall, 18-4 PacWest in 2018-19, received one first place vote and totaled 124 points in the coaches poll.
 
Junior guard Alysha Marcucci of Melbourne, Australia/Marist-Sion and sophomore Amy Baum of Melbourne, Australia/Rowville Secondary were chosen to the Preseason All-PacWest Team for the first time.
 
Marcucci, a two-time All-PacWest Conference and All-PacWest Tournament selection, is the Sharks leading return scorer who averaged 14.1 points, along with 4.8 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 1.7 steals and 0.9 blocked shots a game last season. She shots .383 from the floor, including .336 from the 3-point arc where she averaged 2.5 3-pointers per game. Marcucci set the HPU record for 3-pointers in a game when connecting on eight at Holy Names when she scored a career-high 28 points. She is currently second on the HPU career 3-point field goal list with 138.
 
Baum, the 2019 PacWest Freshman of the Year as well as All-PacWest Conference and All-PacWest Tournament, helped lead the Sharks to the 2019 PacWest Tournament Championship with her 24 points in the title game against Azusa Pacific. She averaged 9.4 points, led the team with 6.6 rebounds, led PacWest with 4.8 assists a game. She shot .429 from the field and .382 from the 3-point arc. Baum twice came within one stat of a triple-double (27 points, 14 rebounds and nine assists against Dominican and 10 points, nine rebounds and 10 assists vs Academy of Art). She was named PacWest Freshman of the Week five times, and was once Defender of the Week.
 
LAST TIME OUT VS. WHITMAN COLLEGE (EXHIBITION)
The Wildcats played just one exhibition game before starting regular season play for 2019-20. They hosted Whitman College last Saturday, Nov. 2 and walked away with a 74-65 win against the Blues.
 
Five Wildcats scored in double figures in the contest and two finished with double-double performances. Kaelie Flores was the top performer with a game-high 20 points and 16 rebounds, while Alexis Pana chipped in 12 points and dished out a game-high 11 assists.
 
As a team, CWU shot 44.4% from the floor and the defense held Whitman to 38.5%. A big help in the Wildcats win was a 32-22 advantage in points in the paint while holding a 44-36 edge in the rebounding battle.
 
Brianna Phiakhamngon, Samantha Bowman and Taylor Shaw finished the game in double-figures. Phiakhamngon had 13 points while going 5-10 from the floor. The performance included a team-high two three-pointers. Bowman also poured in 13 points. Bowman went 5-6 from the floor while pulling down eight rebounds. Shaw finished the game with 12 points in 19 minutes of work.
 
CWU vs. SSU HISTORY
The two teams have met just five times since 2004 with the Wildcats coming out on top three times. As a team, the Wildcats are averaging 75.6 points against the Warriors.
 
Last season, the Wildcats played the Warriors on Nov. 11, as the Wildcats won 94-59. Shaw lead all scorers with 28 points, going 9-12 from the field including seven three-pointers. She pulled down four rebounds, dished out three assists and nabbed two steals. Shaw aided the team in shooting 63.6 percent from deep, going 14-22 for the game. 
 
CWU vs. HPU HISTORY
Since 2006, the Wildcats and Sharks have meet nine times. The Wildcats hold a 6-3 record in those meetings. The Wildcats opened the series by winning the first four games between the two schools. As a team, the Wildcats are averaging 71.3 points against the Sharks.

The last time the Wildcats played the Sharks was on Nov. 11, 2017 inside Nicholson Pavilion. The Sharks came out on top 77-68. Flores scored 11 points in the contest.
