Baseball Sweeps Twin Bill Over Corban

KEIZER, Ore. (Feb. 17) – The Central Washington University baseball team (3-3-1) swept both ends of its doubleheader against Corban University (2-9-1).

Justin Hampson gave the Wildcats a two-run advantage in the top of the 13th inning.

Central started the scoring in the first frame, staking out a 3-0 lead.  Cameron McGrath led off with a single and then stole second.  Mitch Lesmeister roped a single up the middle to drive in McGrath.

Yi-Fan Pan drove a one-out single to left field and was brought in to score two batters later on a single from Yi-An Pan.  Hassell advanced to third on the single and scored on a wild pitch.

The bats went quiet until the Warriors struck for a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning, closing the gap to 3-2.

James Brooks was lifted after 5.1 innings.  He allowed just two runs on five hits.  The senior righty fanned five hitters.  JJ Asinas came on in relief and tossed 2.1 innings.

He allowed just one run in the seventh inning.  A single to center allowed the tying run to cross the plate.

Josh Touhey replaced Asinas in relief and went 3.1 innings of shutout baseball, allowing just three hits.

Both pitching staffs kept runs off the board until the 13th inning.

Robert Ball led off the top of the 13th by drawing a walk.  Trevor Tripoli laid down a sacrifice bunt, advancing Ball to second.  After a ground out, Hampson strode to the plate with Ball on second and two outs.  He drove a pitch over the right field fence, giving the Wildcats a 5-3 lead.

Jacob Forrester set the Warriors down in short order in the bottom half of the 13th, striking out a pair of hitters for his first save of the season.

Hunter French got the call on the mound in game two.  He went six innings and allowed just three hits, while striking out eight.

"We got really good pitching today and played great defensively," CWU Head Coach Desi Storey said afterward.  "We are still looking to find ourselves a bit on offense.  Pinto had a great game two, driving in five.  He had two strikes and two outs in both at-bats, that was huge.  It was a great outing from French, he just pounded the strike zone."

The Crimson and Black rode the momentum from game one and scored in the opening frame for the second straight contest.  A bases loaded double from Jon Pinto started the merry go round, allowing Colton Bunt, Yi-an Pan, and Hampson to score.

Central's offense tacked on three more runs in the fifth.  Yi-an Pan drove a sacrifice fly to right, before Pinto roped another two-run double.

The Warriors got one run back in the seventh, but Colton Turner was able to put out the flames to secure the win.

Central Washington is back in action on Monday (Feb. 18) for one game against Western Oregon University.  First pitch is scheduled for noon.
