NAMPA, Idaho – The Central Washington University women's soccer fell to Hawaii Hilo (2-0-0), 4-2, in a non-conference match.
Central's (2-2-0) first opportunity came just a minute and a half into the match. A corner kick gave way to a shot from
Maci Parke which ended wide left of the frame.
Peyton Vogel got at goal a minute later, but Bailey Cahill tuned the shot aside. The ensuing corner kick from the Wildcats was swept aside by the Vulcan defenders.
Both offenses were quiet until
Sydney Lowe struck in the 20
th minute. She beat the keeper for a 1-0 Wildcat advantage.
Lowe and Parke had consecutive chances just moments after the restart, but both shots ended up right of the net.
The Crimson and Black owned the first 27 minutes of play, outshooting Hilo 5-0. The Vulcans first shot came from Crystal Sanchez in the 28
th minute. Her shot was to the right of the net.
Annie Brejc levelled the score line for the Vulcans in the 29
th minute. Jodi Lillie and Nanea Wall recorded assists, finding Brejc open for the equalizer.
Bella Brown's chance on goal in the 41
st minute was turned aside, ensuring the contest went to halftime at level pegging.
On the restart, Hilo capitalized twice in 12 minutes. Brenna Rill gave Hilo a 2-1 advantage after receiving a pass from Brende Yoshizumi in the 55
th minute. The brace was added two minutes later by Piper Collado, who had just checked on for Brejc, for the 3-1 lead.
In the 67
th minute,
Olivia Sloan fired a shot high. The Vulcans responded in the 80
th minute, slotting their fourth goal of the afternoon. Wall buried her shot for a 4-1 lead.
As time drained in the second half, Sloan found the back of the net in the 89
th minute for her second goal of the season. Brown picked up her first assist of the year.
"Really wanted to come and play a solid 90 minutes," CWU Head Coach
Michael Farrand said. "We started on the front foot with a great goal from Syd [Lowe] with an assist from Bryne [Waite]. We took a break with the heat, but came out too high and got counter attacked from the middle of the field. After that we just struggled to put our game back together. We gave up a goal on a misplayed set piece, gave up a goal on a corner kick, and a final goal on another counter attack from midfield. We managed to scrape one goal back on a ball switched to the far side where Sloan finished almost the same type of goal that she had against East Bay."
The Wildcats outshot Hilo 13-7, including 7-4 in shots on goal.
Central is back in action on Monday (Sept. 16) for their home opener against Hawaii Pacific. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Tomlinson Stadium.
