Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Vikings Cage Wildcats

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – The Central Washington University women's soccer team fell to No. 18 Western Washington University, 6-0.

The Vikings (12-3-2, 9-3-0) scored three goals in each half, including two in the opening 10 minutes of play. The Wildcats (4-12-0, 3-9-0) managed 11 shots and put eight on frame. Shots were even after the first half at 10 per side, but a 7-1 margin in favor of Western Washington brought the final tally to 17-11. Both teams used a pair of goalkeepers. Liz Canton started in goal for the 'Cats and made four saves, while Megan Fox made a pair of saves off the bench in the second stanza. Natalie Dierickx led the Vikings with seven saves. Claire Henninger also recorded a save after she came on in the final 30 minutes.

Western's first goal came in early in the first half. Dayana Diaz buried a loose ball for a 1-0 lead. Four minutes later, Jenna Killman made it 2-0 in the ninth minute. She also scored the Vikings final goal of the half, tallying her second maker just 22 minutes in.

"It was a hard game for us today," Assistant Coach Emmy Koflanovich said. "It took us a little while into the first half to get the momentum and we just couldn't get anything to go in. Second half we needed to respond and that didn't happen. Western did a great job staying in the attack and finishing the chances they had."

Central's offense put pressure on the Vikings after they tallied their second goal. Over a span of eight minutes, the Wildcats took four shots and held Western to none. Makinzie Packwood, Sophia Keenan, and Bella Brown were all stymied by Dierickz. Jaxyn Farmen, Paige Devine, Sydney Lowe, and Brown had chances later in the half but were met by the Vikings' keeper each time.

It took only six minutes for the Vikings to find the back of the net in the second half. Sophie Butterfield found a loose ball inside the box and buried it for a 4-0 lead. The Vikings added a fifth goal in the 60th minute. Makenzie Burks played a long through ball on the deck and found Darby Doyle slipping past the Wildcats' defense. All alone with the keeper, Doyle sent her shot past an outstretched arm into the back of the net. Western's final goal came in the 77thminute.

Lowe had Central's only shot of the half, but she was turned away by Henninger.

Central Washington is back in action on Thursday (Nov. 4) as they travel to Seattle Pacific University for a 4:30 p.m. kick-off.
