Falcons Escape Wildcats in Nicholson

ELLENSBURG, Wash.—The Central Washington volleyball team fell to the Falcons from Seattle Pacific at home in three consecutive sets. The Falcons are the first team to take down the Wildcats at home this season.

A team hitting percentage of .069 was not enough for the 'Cats to keep pace with the Falcons strong-swinging offense.

"We had a tough time scoring toight. We had some chances but SPU played great and we did not." CWU Head Coach Mario Andaya said.

The opening set kicked off in favor of the Falcons. The 'Cats came out the gate sluggish, and the Falcons took advantage and a quick 9-0 lead.

Tia Andaya gave the 'Cats an ace and some life to open the set. Marianna Payne and Leanna Shymanski gave the 'Cats their first kills, and the 'Cats trailed 14-6.

Sydney Remsberg had a service ace that Tia Andaya and Ashley Kaufman followed with kills, and the 'Cats still trailed 17-10.

The 'Cats found a few additional kills, but nine errors and a -.061 hitting percentage wasn't enough to keep pace with the Falcons. The Falcons took set one, 25-15.

Set two opened with a bit more kindness to the 'Cats. While the Falcons jumped to a 4-0 lead, the 'Cats were able to find their footing and bring it back within one, 5-4.

A kill by Kyle Thorne, back-to-back attack errors by the Falcons, and a service ace by Shaunessy Fisk provided the 'Cats their first lead of the night, 8-6.

The grudge match continued, and a kill from Kylie Thorne pushed the lead out by two but the Falcons were quick to respond and tie up 17-17.

The 'Cats and Falcons continued to fight through a few more equalizers, but a kill and a block put the Falcons at set point, 24-22.

The 'Cats and Falcons fought through multiple equalizers, but it was the Falcons who flew off with set two on back-to-back blocks, 25-22.

In set three the Falcons continued to dominate the early points, taking a 4-0 lead before Marianna Payne and the 'Cats answered, bringing it back within one 4-3.

Ashley Kaufman and Tia Andaya gave the 'Cats a pair of kills, but a box full of errors allowed the Falcons to take a commanding lead, 18-10.

Late set life given by way of kills from Ashley Kaufman and Kylie Thorne helped the 'Cats find a 24-24 equalizer, but the Falcons flew off with the final set and the match, 26-24.
