MARIETTA, GA.—The Central Washington Women's Rugby team earned a hard fought win over the Life University Running Eagles in a very tight match, 10-5.
QUOTABLE
"Today is a proud day for this program. We gutted out a win against a very tough Life team. Both sides suffered key injuries as the physicality of the collisions took their toll." Said CWU Head Coach
Trevor Richards. "Our forwards won us the game with their strong scrummaging and big carries. Defensively we were able to contain their speed for the most part, but they did open us up a couple of times. Thankfully our scramble defense managed to snuff out most of those line breaks."
ONE SCORE MATCH
After coming off of a tough loss at home on senior day to Lindenwood, The Wildcats were eager to bounce back and played with heart and toughness.
The 'Cats played tough and physical all game against Life. The Running Eagles were able to break through the line once for a try but failed on the conversion.
Offensively the 'Cats were able to find the edge one more time, scoring two successful tries by
Kayla Guyton and
Haley Abeyta. Unfortunately, the 'Cats offense was zero for two at the kicking tee.
Thankfully the 'Cats line was able to hold their own to finish out the game, holding Life to only the single try, and taking the win.
"We're going to celebrate the win today, but we have a lot to work on next week if we hope to have a successful semi-final match. Our backs need to do a much better job of protecting the ball and we have to improve in seeing and accessing space. With that said, this team had a great week with an all-time high GPA and now beating Life. We just need to heal up some sore bodies and prepare for the next battle."
The Wildcats next fixture is the semi-finals currently scheduled for April 17th at noon vs. Life University in Tomlinson Stadium.
