ELLENSBURG, Wash.—The Central Washington women's soccer team won their spring opener in double overtime against the Saint Martin's University Saints.
QUOTABLE
"You know this is our first game of the year, Saint Martin's came to play even with the tough day to travel and get here. Heather has done a great job with them and they were able to put three goals on us." Said CWU Head Coach Michael Farrand. "We just had to find another way to be successful together."
"It felt really good being out and playing again. It was a mix of nervousness and excited, but it was great being out with the girls again." Said CWU Freshman Emily Darcy.
ACTION ON THE PITCH
The 'Cats got the action going early, an opening goal by senior Jayme Woodfill in the 4th minute put them on top early.
The Saint's answered fast, a goal scored in the 6th minute tied the game back up. The 'Cats battled constantly, maintaining possession for a majority of the early game. The Saint's made a few offensive pushes and a penalty inside the goal box gave them a penalty kick. The Saint's would score on the penalty kick and retake the lead.
Only three minutes after the penalty kick in the 19th minute junior Sydney Lowe found open space and scored her first goal of the season. This tied it up at 2-2.
After almost twenty minutes of an offensive stalemate, the Saint's finally broke through again scoring their third goal and taking the lead 3-2 just before the half.
In the 70th minute while the 'Cats battled to maintain possession, it was sophomore Kiana Harris who scored the game tying goal to even it back up.
The 'Cats battled through the remaining half and eventually into overtime. Only a minute and half into the second overtime it was freshman Emily Darcy who scored the gaming winning goal for the 'Cats and the first of her collegiate career.
The 'Cats next match is a rematch on April 24th at Saint Martin's University scheduled for 1:00 PM.
